Your Child's School Library: Online Tools for Finding Books

Presented to PTA on Nov. 18, 2009
by
Ms. Harmon (Library Media Specialist) and Mrs. Urbanski (Language Arts Coordinator)

Presentation points:

A classroom library's collection is chosen with the age group's reading ability span in mind.

The school library's collection is chosen to to provide materials that support the K-5 curriculum, foster inquiry and encourage reading for pleasure.

In order to use books that interest or appeal to them, many children in grades K-3 will need a reading partner. A reading partner may be a parent, older sibling, grandparent, baby-sitter, etc. The act of reading and talking together about a book will foster reading development. Visit the Jim Trelease web site for more information on reading together.

"Do-overs" are just fine... Children are very excited to make their own choices when selecting books from the library. There are many reasons why they might select a book. (i.e. to mimic a sibling, make connections to friend's selections, find information on a topic of interest, the cover or size of a book, etc.) If a library book comes home that a parent feels is not a good choice for that particular child, simply send it back for another book - just call it a "do-over"!

Adults are very influential when it comes to kids and reading. Children often get their ideas about the books that they read for fun from adults (Kids & Family Reading Report) Reading classics and your childhood favorites are great ways to bond with your children.
