Voters approve
2009-10 school budget; elect three to Board of
Education
On Tuesday, May 19, 2009, Guilderland
Central School District residents approved (YES: 1,994, NO:
1,423) an $85,320,425 budget for the 2009-10 school year.
This budget represents a 1.79 percent increase in spending
over the current year’s budget and will result in an
estimated 0.58 percent tax rate increase for residents in
the Town of Guilderland—the lowest projected increase in the
past 15 years.
Voters also approved (YES: 2,069, NO:
1,329) a proposition to purchase nine new buses and one
maintenance truck and elected three members to the Board of
Education:
• Julie Cuneo (2,266)
• Denise Eisele (1,864)
• Richard Weisz (1,659)
• Allan Simpson (1,618)
• Elijah Sharma (1,431)
As referenced in the
Building Project Referendum Update newsletter (PDF) sent
home to all parents in April, asbestos abatement activities
have been scheduled at Altamont Elementary School as part of
the project. While the majority of the abatement work was
conducted over April recess, minor additional works still
needs to be completed. As such, we would like to take
advantage of the upcoming long holiday weekend to complete
the process at the school. Please note that asbestos
abatement will take place at AES over the Memorial Day
recess (May 23-25, 2009). Notification will be posted at
the school alerting community members to the fact that the
abatement will take place.
The safety of our students and staff is
our highest priority. For that reason, please be assured
that the district is strictly adhering to all appropriate
state regulations for the safe and proper removal of
asbestos material. It is important to note that no abatement
will be done while the building is occupied. For that
reason, no one will be allowed in the building during
Memorial Day weekend. When students and staff return to the
building on May 26, all planned abatement activities will be
completed.
School will be in session on Friday, May
22
Please note that because the district
did use three snow days this winter, all GCSD schools
will be in session on Friday, May 22 (contingent school
recess day).
