Elementary Curriculum

 

 
Grades 1 - 4

Basic movement concept and skill development is the primary concern of the grade 1 - 4 program. At these levels, much time is spent helping the student become aware of and develop a working knowledge of:

  • Body awareness
  • Balance
  • Agility
  • Directionality
  • Rhythm
  • Strategy
  • Reaction time
  • Timing
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Foot-eye coordination
  • Strength/power/leverage
  • Physical fitness

Within these concepts the following attributes are emphasized:

  • Safety
  • Risk-taking
  • Trust
  • Leadership
  • Cooperation
  • Initiative
Grade 5

The 5th grade physical education curriculum represents a gradual transition from the concept approach to a more formal sport skills program. Children are introduced to a variety of sport units and are assessed in the following: Basketball, Circus Arts, Floor Tennis, Gymnastics, Physical Fitness (twice a year) and Rhythm & Dance. In addition, a Cooperative Games/Project Adventure unit will be taught but not graded.
