Water testing at Altamont Elementary School

The following is a letter from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marie Wiles --

May 26, 2017

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

As you may remember, in September 2016 Governor Cuomo signed a new law that requires public schools in New York to test all water outlets currently or potentially used for drinking or cooking purposes for lead levels.

On Tuesday, May 24, the district received the results from a resampling of water sources that previously exceeded the action level (15 parts per billion) at all district elementary schools. The results are taken from tests after remediation efforts were made. Those efforts consisted primarily of replacing faucets, faucet lines and shut-off valves. While the majority of the results came back under an actionable level, there were a few areas (sinks only) with elevated readings.

All retested outlets exceeding the action level will have a filter installed and will be tested again. The water testing results for each of the elementary schools as well as additional information about New York's water testing law have been posted on the district website:
You may view Altamont's most recent results here (PDF)

We will continue to keep you updated throughout this process. If you have additional questions or concerns related to water testing, please contact your principal, or me.

Marie Wiles, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools
