Task Force on Bullying
and Harassment
In May 2003, the Guilderland Central
School District formed a Task Force on Bullying and
Harassment in an effort to better understand the scope and
severity of the problem and to implement a program to
address the issue of bullying on a district-wide
level.
Co-chaired by Assistant Superintendent
for Instruction Nancy Andress and Lynnwood Elementary School
Principal James Dillon, the Task Force consists of nearly 50
participants, including administrators, teachers and support
staff, social workers, Board of Education members, parents,
students and community volunteers.
The goal of the Task Force
The goal of the Task Force is to
identify programs and practices that allow everyone to enjoy
the Guilderland Schools equally, and to feel safe, secure
and accepted regardless of color, race, gender, popularity,
sexual orientation, athletic ability, intelligence, religion
or nationality. They are working to create a safer, more
supportive place for children to learn and grow, and to
ultimately build a stronger school community.
The work of the Task Force Task
Force members have been meeting regularly since May 2003,
working throughout the summer to prepare for the 2003-04
school year. They have been assessing current conditions
throughout the district, developing policies and procedures,
organizing professional development and training activities
for staff, and formulating a communications plan to work
with both students and parents on issues related to bullying
and harassment throughout the school year. The
Task Force on Bullying and Harassment continues to meet
regularly.
