Course Description

Given the fact most of our modern day health problems represent poor decisions rather than medical failures, the primary goal of this course is to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge that they can intelligently use to ultimately live a lifetime of appreciating and attaining wellness.  The content in this course deals with knowledge – concepts, facts, generalizations and understanding; attitudes – values, appreciations;

skills – communication advocacy, decision-making, planning and goal setting and self-management.  The course is divided into six units of study. 

ü      Unit One – Introduction to Health and Wellness

ü      Unit Two – Mental and Emotional Health

ü      Unit Three – Respect and Non-Violence

ü      Unit Four – Nutrition and Fitness

ü      Unit Five – Addiction

ü      Unit Six – Human Sexuality

Attendance

Regular class attendance is expected and is vital to your performance in this class.  Students will be responsible for all work missed during class absences.  Since a daily participation grade is earned each class, your presence in class is essential to successful completion of Health.

Class Materials

Students must utilize the following:  folder with two pockets, pen/pencil, loose-leaf (lined) paper and an open, attentive mind! 

Grading Policy

Every assignment, quiz, test, project or homework is given a “maximum point value” (MPV).  Your grade is computed by adding up all the points you have earned in the course divided by the total number of available points. 

3-5 - Unit tests (each worth 100 points)

3-5 - Unit projects (each worth 100 points)

Up to 20 class assignments ranging in point value from 15 to 50 points

Daily class participation (up to 5 points daily)

 Rubric for Class Participation:

5 – student actively engages in class discussions frequently with thoughtful insight

4 – student engages in class discussions frequently

3 – student answers at least 2 verbal questions during class, however does not engage in class discussion

2 – student answers 1 verbal question during class and does not engage in class discussion

1 – student is alert during class, however does not attempt to answer questions or participate in class discussions

0 – student is not alert and refuses to participate in class discussions

Late Assignments/Tests/Quizzes

In order to receive full credit, all assignments are due on the assigned day.  Late assignments will be accepted up to five (5) school days late with a 15% penalty assessed each school day late.  If the assignment is not turned in by the end of the fifth school day, it will not be accepted and will receive a zero.  

Tests and quizzes are expected to be made up by the end of the next class, either during advisory or at a pre-arranged time with the teacher.  Failure to comply within the allotted time will result in a zero.

Attached you will find a complete list of the potential films we may view in Health.

            Attached please find a descriptive listing of videos/movies that may be viewed in your child’s Health Education Course this year.  Some videos may contain material that may be sensitive to certain individuals.  Please review the video list to determine whether you will permit your child to view them. Appropriate alternative assignments will be provided for individuals not given permission to view a particular video(s)/movie(s).
