Guilderland Central School District Instructional programs

Music and art at the elementary level

Art instruction

Art instruction develops students' understanding of art through experience with imaginary and realistic design problems. Each student has at least one experience yearly in the following areas: painting, design, print making, three-dimensional sculpting, and drawing with a variety of media. Children receive art instruction from the art teacher once a week.

General Music

Students have general music twice weekly. Instructional activities include rote singing of songs, syllable singing of melodic intervals and rhythms, movement activities, listening and active response to music. Additionally, upper grade children have the opportunity to participate in chorus once weekly during the student activity period.

Instrumental Music

Students who choose to participate in the instrumental music program learn to play an instrument and to read and interpret music. They have opportunities for both individual and small group musical expression and participate weekly in a performing group -- band and/or orchestra. Students begin this program in fourth grade with continuous development through the middle and high school programs.
