Guilderland Central School District Instructional programs

Music and art at Farnsworth Middle School

Art instruction

The art program is based on a continuum of skills begin in the elementary grades. Units include drawing, painting, sculpting in various media, printing, computer art and dimensional design. Each grade level includes fundamentals of art as part of every lesson. Students in grades six through eight take art for the equivalent of one period for ten weeks each year.

Music

All students take General Music each year in grades six through eight extending their music skills and knowledge gained in elementary school. The program broadens their experience with tonal, rhythmic and executive skills while exploring musical styles and forms. Students have an opportunity for creative composition and performance using electronic keyboards and MIDI technology. Seventh graders complete an in-depth unit on jazz and eighth graders study the development of musical theatre.

Students may also participate in vocal and/or instrumental performing music. At each grade level, there is a band, chorus and orchestra. Unlike at many schools, Farnsworth Middle School students may participate both vocally and instrumentally. Additional select ensembles meet before and after school including two Jazz Bands, Select Band, Select Chorus and Chamber Strings.
