Music

art
at
Guilderland
High
School
Art
instruction
The
art
department
provides
a
variety
of
courses
that
allow
students
to
appreciate,
understand,
and
produce
art
through
various
media
and
techniques
for
self-expression.
The
courses
are
designed
to
amplify
students'
interest
in
the
fine
arts,
to
increase
their
awareness
of
the
impact
art
has
on
their
lives,
to
provide
an
opportunity
for
creative
expression
in
various
media,
and
to
support
the
development
of
students'
special
talents.
Course
offerings
include
Studio
in
Art,
Drawing
and
Painting,
Sculpture,
Advertising
Art,
Ceramics,
and
Cartooning
and
Animation.
Students
are
required
to
complete
one
unit
of
study
in
cultural
arts
which
includes
fine
arts.
This
may
be
accomplished
through
taking
an
interdisciplinary
course,
Exploratory
Arts,
which
includes
art,
music,
dance,
theatre,
and
film
or
by
another
art
or
music
course
or
participation
in
a
performing
music
group.
Students
may
earn
college
credit
or
advanced
standing
by
enrolling
in
AP
Advanced
Art
or
by
developing
an
AP
Art
portfolio.
Music
High
school
students
have
the
option
of
participating
in
one
or
more
of
thirteen
performing
groups
including
Symphonic
Band,
Symphony
Orchestra,
Mixed
Choir,
Concert
Choir,
Concert
Orchestra,
Jazz
Ensembles
and
many
other
small
select
groups.
These
various
musical
ensembles
promote
excellence
throughout
each
stage
of
a
student's
musical
education.
Participation
in
performing
music
may
be
used
to
meet
the
graduation
requirement
of
one
credit
in
the
fine
arts.
Students
may
also
elect
a
course
in
Music
Theory
that
has
the
opportunity
for
an
AP
exam
each
May.
Creative
Arts
School
The
Creative
Arts
School
provides
enrichment
experiences
for
the
general
school
population
as
well
as
for
those
students
with
a
high
interest
in
the
arts.
| In
addition
to
music
and
art
offerings,
courses
are
offered
in
theatre
and
dance.
Guilderland
is
one
of
very
few
schools
in
New
York
to
provide
a
state-approved
course
in
both
acting
and
directing,
and
dance.
Independent
study
in
theatre
is
also
available.
Students
may
use
these
courses
to
meet
their
fine
arts
