Music and art at Guilderland High School

Art instruction

The art department provides a variety of courses that allow students to appreciate, understand, and produce art through various media and techniques for self-expression. The courses are designed to amplify students' interest in the fine arts, to increase their awareness of the impact art has on their lives, to provide an opportunity for creative expression in various media, and to support the development of students' special talents. Course offerings include Studio in Art, Drawing and Painting, Sculpture, Advertising Art, Ceramics, and Cartooning and Animation.

Students are required to complete one unit of study in cultural arts which includes fine arts. This may be accomplished through taking an interdisciplinary course, Exploratory Arts, which includes art, music, dance, theatre, and film or by another art or music course or participation in a performing music group.

Students may earn college credit or advanced standing by enrolling in AP Advanced Art or by developing an AP Art portfolio.

Music

High school students have the option of participating in one or more of thirteen performing groups including Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Mixed Choir, Concert Choir, Concert Orchestra, Jazz Ensembles and many other small select groups. These various musical ensembles promote excellence throughout each stage of a student's musical education. Participation in performing music may be used to meet the graduation requirement of one credit in the fine arts. Students may also elect a course in Music Theory that has the opportunity for an AP exam each May.

Creative Arts School

The Creative Arts School provides enrichment experiences for the general school population as well as for those students with a high interest in the arts.

In addition to music and art offerings, courses are offered in theatre and dance. Guilderland is one of very few schools in New York to provide a state-approved course in both acting and directing, and dance. Independent study in theatre is also available. Students may use these courses to meet their fine arts requirement.
