Since 1985, the Capital Zone of
the New York State Association for Health, Physical
Education, Recreation and Dance has been recognizing
students for their character, sportsmanship,
citizenship, and leadership both inside and outside
of the classroom. On Monday, May 7, 2007, Hudson
Valley Community College played host to the
organization’s 22nd annual Sandra G. Morley Physical
Education Student Leadership Awards ceremony. (The
previous event location, Guilderland High School,
could no longer accommodate the growing number of
leadership honoress and so ceremonies were moved to
HVCC's McDonough Sports Complex.)
More than 650 elementary,
middle, and junior high school students, from
districts as far north as Warrensburgh and as far
south as Chatham, were honored. In total, 37 school
districts were represented at the event coordinated
by Guilderland Elementary School physical education
teachers Colleen Mickle and Deb Wein.
Highlights of the evening
included a keynote address by guest speaker Robert
Oates, a prominent physical educator and cross
country coach, a performance by the Shenendehowa
Color Guard, and the presentation of awards to the
following Guilderland students:
