Teaching
assistants
Teaching assistants are appointed by the
board of education to provide direct instructional services
to students under the general supervision of licensed or
certified teachers. Their duties include:
-
Working
with individual pupils or groups of pupils on special
instructional projects.
-
Providing
the teacher with information about pupils that will
assist the teacher in the development of appropriate
learning experiences.
-
Assisting
pupils in the use of available instructional resources
and assisting in the development of instructional
materials.
-
Using
their own special skills and abilities to assist in such
areas as foreign languages, arts, crafts, music and
similar subjects.
-
Assisting
in related instructional work as required.
Teaching assistants must hold or be
eligible to apply for one of the following credentials:
Teacher
aides & monitors
Teacher aides and monitors may be
assigned by the board of education to assist teachers in
such non-teaching duties as:

Managing
records, materials and equipment.
-
Attending
to the physical needs of children.
-
Supervising
students and supporting teachers when such services are
determined and supervised by teachers.
Clerical
worker
The Guilderland School District offers
various types of clerical positions. Candidates must satisfy
Albany County Civil Service requirements for these
positions.
Computer
technologist
This is a competitive level Civil
Service position responsible for providing technology
related support at the building level; assist in the
implementation of the district technology plan; assist the
Chief Technology Specialist with staff development and
coordinated training, usage reports and recommendations for
the future. Successful candidates will be required to take
the appropriate Civil Service Examination and be reachable
from the list. Duties include:

Providing on-site
support for technology-implementation projects including
internal and external networking; installation and use
of hardware and software; maintenance and repair of
technology equipment.

Assisting in planning
and implementation of staff development activities;
promoting and assisting in the training of staff and
students in the use of technology hardware and software.
-
Assisting staff in
resolving problems related to hardware and software and
provide support in the installation and maintenance of
the computer network.

Managing the Internet
connections.

Providing support for
curriculum integration.
Head custodian
The head custodian is responsible for
the custodial and maintenance work of a school facility,
equipment, and adjacent yards. While performing the duties
of this job, the head custodian is regularly required to
stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach
with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, and
crouch; and talk and hear. The head custodian must
frequently lift and/or move more than 40 pounds. Specific
vision abilities required by this job include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth
perception, and ability to adjust focus. Duties include:

Training custodial staff; planning,
assigning, and directing work; providing input for
appraising performance; addressing complaints and
resolving problems.

Making regular inspections of buildings
and grounds to maintain proper cleaning and maintenance
procedures and making recommendations for improvements
and new equipment.

Scheduling and assigns cleaning and
maintenance work of custodial staff and checking to see
that assignments are carried out.
-
Inspecting and monitoring work
performed by outside contractors.
-
Checking to assure that buildings are
heated, cleaned, secure and unlocked in readiness for
all activities.
-
Maintaining records and makes reports
of supplies, acts of vandalism or breakage to
appropriate supervisor.

In cooperation with building principal,
planning daily and yearly work schedules for custodial
staff.

Assisting in budget preparation.
-
Assisting in taking night emergency
calls as required.
-
Implementing and maintaining an
efficient preventative maintenance system.

Performing custodial and related work
as required.
Custodian
The custodian performs manual work in
cleaning and caring of school district property and adjacent
yards. The custodian also does related minor maintenance
tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the
custodian is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to
finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or
balance; and stoop, kneel, and crouch; and talk and hear.
The custodian must frequently lift and/or move more than 25
pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job
include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust
focus. Duties include:

Sweeping and mopping floors, corridors
and stairs

Washing windows, walls, blackboards,
sinks and other fixtures.

tables and other equipment.

Clearing snow and ice from walks,
stairs and pathways.

Mowing lawns, rakes leaves and performs
a variety of outside grounds keeping activities as

equipment.

Monitoring the operation of furnace and
boiler room equipment, making minor repairs or
adjustments as appropriate.

Painting rooms and equipment and
assisting in making minor plumbing, carpentry and
electrical repairs.

school property.

Giving directions to visitors and
assisting with outside activities.
Groundsman
The groundsman performs
manual work in grounds maintenance and related work in the
maintenance department. While performing the duties of this
job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use
hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms;
climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, and crouch; and talk and
hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move more
than 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this

focus. Duties include:

Mowing, raking and cutting grass.

Keeping grounds clear of litter.

Removing snow and ice and spreading

Operating trucks, mowers, tractors and
snow plow in performance of duties.

Hauling and spreading top soil, gravel
and related grounds keeping materials.

Food
service worker
The
food service worker performs manual work related to
the preparation and serving of food. While performing the
duties of this job, the Food Service Worker is regularly
required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or
feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop,
kneel, and crouch; and talk and hear. The food service
worker must frequently lift and/or move more than 25 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close
vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision,
depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Duties include:

Heating/reheating food for meal service
daily.

Inventorying, ordering and stocking
food and supplies.

Maintaining a variety of records
including those related to production records, daily
reports, register tapes and receipts.

Serving food on the serving lines.

Monitoring refrigerator temperatures on
a regular basis.
-
Cleaning and maintaining kitchen
equipment and serving area.

Performing daily tasks as needed
including operating the dishwasher, ringing the register
and setting up for meetings.

Communicating with cook or school lunch
manager regarding repairs and complaints or suggestions
from building staff.

Attending meetings and in-service as
required.

May assist in the training of
substitutes and new food service employees.
School bus
driver
The bus driver performs
skilled work involved in the operation of motor vehicles.
The bus driver is responsible for the safety and conduct of
the children who are passengers. While performing the duties
of this job, the bus driver is regularly required to sit;
use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk and hear. The
bus driver frequently is required to reach with hands and
arms. The bus driver is occasionally required to stand,
walk, and climb or balance. The bus driver must occasionally
lift and/or move up to 120 pounds. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and
ability to adjust focus. Duties include:

Operating a school bus on a regular
schedule or on special occasions.

Checking the operating condition of the
bus before starting on a trip.

Reporting any operational defect to
immediate supervisor or designee.

Informing children about safety
practices.

Maintaining orderly conduct of children
on the bus.

Keeping bus exterior washed and
interior clean and neat.

May be required to operate a station
wagon or other vehicle(s).

maintenance tasks on the vehicle(s).

Maintaining records of mileage, routes,
times and incidents.

May be asked to assist in the
preparation of maps of routes and pick-up points.
School bus
monitor
The school bus monitor
performs work involving the supervision and care of children
with special needs. Although the school bus monitor may be
assigned to specific children with special needs, they are
responsible for assisting the driver in the supervision and
conduct of all children who are passengers. While performing
the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required
to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel;
reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel,
or crouch; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently
move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close vision, distance vision,
color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and
ability to adjust focus. Duties include:

Assisting students with handicapping
conditions while they are riding the bus to and from
school.

Assisting the children in safely
getting on and off the bus and across highways and
streets as required.

Assisting children in lower grades with
winter clothing.
-
Assisting in maintaining discipline on
the bus.

Assisting in explaining and carrying
out bus safety regulations and practices.
-
Operating wheel chairs and related
equipment as required.
-
Checking the operating condition of all
handicap equipment on the bus prior to and at the
conclusion of every trip.

Assisting the driver in keeping the
interior of the bus neat and clean during the route.
-
Administering minor first aide
treatment as needed.
Bus
mechanic
The
automotive mechanic works under the supervision of the
Supervisor and/or Assistant Supervisor of Transportation,
and performs skilled work involved in the adjustment,
service, repair and maintenance of school buses and other
district automotive equipment. While performing the duties
of this job, the automotive mechanic is regularly required
to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach
with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch,
or crawl; lay on back; and talk and hear. The automotive
mechanic frequently is required to reach with hands and
arms. The automotive mechanic must occasionally lift and/or
move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities
