Important information for teachers on copyright and the use of clip art images

It has come to our attention that a district within the state was recently fined $1,000 for the unauthorized use of a stock photo on their district Web site. As many of you maintain individual classroom/teacher Web pages, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you that all stock photo images have individual “terms of usage” that you need to be aware of prior to posting anything to your site.

A “stock” photo is any photograph taken by an outside company and provided to users for a set price and for an agreed upon usage. Example companies include Getty Images, iStock Photo, and Clipart.com. These Web sites are not to be used to download images for your teacher Web pages.

There are, however, several Web sites that are appropriate to use as sources of images for your teacher pages, including:

Microsoft Office Clip Art may also be used on your Web pages, as long as you are searching for images on your own computer or school computers, which have licensed software. Please do not download images from the Microsoft Office Web site. They are not approved for our use on Web pages. The official “Use of Microsoft Copyrighted Content” agreement posted to the Microsoft Web site does allow for the use of images obtained from the site in printed publications, such as a student project or building newsletter.

Should you have images from any of the above mentioned “prohibited” sites posted on your teacher Web pages, you will need to delete them from your pages immediately. In addition, if you do not know where an image is from, it is better to be safe than sorry—so please remove any such images from your Web pages and replace them with images from appropriate sites, if desired.

Please take some time to look through your teacher Web pages and delete any images that you do not have rights to, and credit all images for which you do have rights should the “terms of usage” require you to do so.

Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.
