2009-10 Budget

Community budget forum

Thank you for your feedback
On Tuesday, January 13, some 30 members of the GCSD communityincluding students, parents, district retirees, and other community memberscame together for a night of brainstorming on how best to plan for the 2009-10 school year budget. Members of the Board of Education and district administrators were also on hand to listen to the community's feedback throughout the night.

The Community Forum, held at Guilderland High School, kicked off with a welcome from Superintendent of Schools John W. McGuire.  Following the opening remarks, Assistant Superintendent for Business Neil Sanders presented a brief overview of the current economic state of the district.

Attendees then broke out into small focus groups to discuss six essential questions related to the following budget topics: class size and staffing; professional development; facilities; athletics and extracurricular activities; non-mandated programs; and fiscal planning. A facilitator from each focus group then reported out his/her table's comments regarding the essential questions.  The evening concluded with a thank you from Board of Education President Richard Weisz.

The district would like to sincerely thank everyone who participated in this event. Your cooperation and interest helped to make the evening a great success! The insight, opinions, and questions you provided during the small group work sessions will be shared with our Citizens’ Budget Advisory Committee when they begin meeting in early March.

As the budget process moves forward, Guilderland Central School District’s challenge will be to sustain the quality of a Guilderland education in ways that are affordable to our supportive community. It is crucial that we work together as a community to find an appropriate balance. To that end, the feedback we collected from you and your neighbors during the Community Forum will be instrumental in shaping our spending plan for the upcoming school year.
