Deputy Secretary for Education & Economic Opportunity tours GCSD

On Wednesday, April 23, Guilderland Central School District welcomed New York State Deputy Secretary for Education and Economic Opportunity Ian Rosenblum for a tour of district classrooms. Rosenblum’s visit was in response to an invitation extended to the Governor’s Office by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marie Wiles back in December.

“By any measure, Guilderland is one of the best school districts in the region, state and nation,” said Wiles. “We do amazing things here with all of our students each and every day, and we wanted to be sure that those making important decisions about public education in Albany had an opportunity to see exactly what a high-quality school district looks like in action as well as what’s at stake to be lost if financial support from the state does not improve in future years.”

In particular, Wiles was referring to the need to end the state’s Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA), which has cost the district more than $19 million since it was first introduced in 2009-10. Learn more about some of the financial challenges facing GCSD (PDF)

“As our ability to fund our programs becomes more and more difficult, I worry that we will not be able to sustain the good work we do on behalf of all of our children,” added Wiles. “At the end of the day, our children are relying on us to make sure that they have the best opportunities for success both in school and in life and our state leaders can help ensure that we are able to meet those expectations.”

Rosenblum’s tour of the district began at Guilderland Elementary School, where he visited an English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom, a first grade readers’ workshop, and a fifth grade writers’ workshop. For more than an hour, he observed students at work and asked questions of the school leaders accompanying him on the tour.

The second half of the district tour took place at Farnsworth Middle School, where Rosenblum visited an eighth grade science classroom, a special education classroom, the library media center, the middle school TV news studio, and a music classroom.

Rosenblum also had an opportunity to interact with students throughout his visit, reading alongside some and asking questions of others.

“Even though we only visited two schools, Mr. Rosenblum saw some of the very best Guilderland has to offer its students,” said Wiles. “We are so pleased that he was able to join us to get a first-hand look at what makes us a quality school district.”
