Board of Education appoints Marie Wiles, Ph.D. as superintendent of schools
July 22, 2010—At a special meeting held earlier tonight,
the Guilderland Board of Education unanimously approved the appointment of
Marie Wiles, Ph.D. to the position of superintendent of schools. Wiles will
be succeeding the previous superintendent, John McGuire, who retired from
the district in June.
Wiles comes to Guilderland with more then 23 years of experience in the
field of education. Most recently, she has served as the superintendent of
schools for the Clinton Central School District in Clinton, NY. Prior to
that, Wiles was the district superintendent for the Otsego Northern
Catskills BOCES. Over the years, she has also served that organization as an
assistant superintendent of instruction and as a director of curriculum and
instruction. Wiles began her career in education as an English teacher in
the New York Mills Junior-Senior High School.
She has been actively involved in numerous professional and community
organizations including the New York State Council of School
Superintendents, Kirkland Ventures Steering Committee, Catskill Mountain
Educational Committee, Catskill Area School Study Council, and the Oneonta
Rotary. She has also served on the Boards of the Otsego County Chamber of
Commerce, ARC Otsego, and the Catskill Symphony Orchestra.
Wiles is a graduate of Temple University, where she received her bachelor’s
degree in English, and of SUNY Albany, where she earned a master’s degree in
secondary English education. She completed her coursework for a doctor of
education degree in teaching and curriculum from Syracuse University.
Throughout the next few months, Wiles will be working closely with district
administrators to ensure a smooth transition of leadership. Her new duties
will officially begin October 1, 2010.
Michael J. Marcelle, the current interim superintendent of schools, will
continue to serve the Guilderland Central School District until Wiles takes
her post later this fall.
