FOGA joins with two students to present check for $1,530
July 12, 2011—At a special presentation held Tuesday, July 12 at the Guilderland Central School District Office, the Friends of Guilderland Athletics (FOGA) joined together with Guilderland students Marcus and Brian Knodler to present the district with a check for $1,530 for the district's athletic program.
The money, raised by the two brothers through their participation in a recent triathlon, serves as the kick-off to FOGA's fundraising efforts for the 2011-12 . The group has a goal to raise $24,000 to help reinstate freshman sports in the upcoming school year.
In the budget approved by district voters last May, the district partially restored freshman sports--which were completely eliminated from the budget in 2010-11. GCSD will fund approximately half of the cost of freshman football, soccer, basketball, baseball, and softball. However, the sports will only be played pending the availability of the remaining half of the funds, to be raised through community fundraising efforts led primarily by FOGA. Learn more
Brian and Marcus Knodler raised the $1,500 via pledges
earned when they took part in the
Lake George Challenge on Memorial day weekend. The triathlon consisted of a
75-mile bike ride from Guilderland to Bolton Landing, followed by a hike up
Black Mountain, and then kayaking to Hulette’s Point (Brian) and Ticonderoga
(Marcus).
The brothers asked people to pledge donations, either by mile or a single donation, and gave all proceeds from the Knodler Brothers’ Lake George Challenge to FOGA. Read more about the Knodler Brothers' Lake George Challenge experience
This is the second consecutive year that FOGA has been fundraising for the GCSD athletic program. After months of fundraising, FOGA, working in conjunction with sports booster clubs, was able to raise $60,000 to reinstate freshman sports at Guilderland Central School District in the previous school year.
