GCSD to temporarily stop serving peanut butter and Mini-Wheats amid national product recalls

Oct. 11, 2012—Guilderland Central School District is complying with a communication from the New York State Office of General Services (OGS) instructing school cafeterias to stop serving any peanut butter as a precaution until the OGS can receive further clarification from the USDA regarding the recall of peanut butter products produced by Sunland, Inc.

The Centers for Disease Control and U.S. Food and Drug Administration are investigating Salmonella outbreaks in multiple states that appear to be related to peanut butter. For more information and a list of currently recalled products, visit http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/CORENetwork/ucm320413.htm

GCSD food service director Linda Mossop has confirmed that our schools have none of the currently recalled products, but is halting the sale of all peanut butter as a precaution until we hear more from the OGS. Children who normally receive a peanut butter sandwich will be offered alternate item.

In addition to the recent peanut better recall, GCSD also received word that there is a national voluntary recall of select packages of Frosted Mini-Wheats Bite Size Original and Mini-Wheats Unfrosted Bite Size—both of which are typically offered to Guilderland students in grades K-8 as part of the district’s breakfast program.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration initiated a voluntary recall of the products due to the possible presence of fragments of flexible metal mesh from a faulty manufacturing part. For more information, visit http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm323202.htm?source=govdelivery

The district will not be offering any Mini-Wheat products in schools until further notice. However, alternative breakfast cereal options will continue to be available.
