Dr. Wiles addresses rumor of school violence

Dec. 19, 2012—As you may be aware, there is a rumor circulating that a student or students are planning an incident at Guilderland High School on Friday, Dec. 21. The Guilderland Police Department, in conjunction with GCSD administration, have thoroughly investigated this rumor and have determined that there is no credible danger to students or staff at GCSD.

“We have been working closely with the Guilderland Police Department since first hearing of this rumor and have determined that there is no credible threat at this time,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marie Wiles. “However, in light of the recent tragedy in Newtown, Conn., we have requested that the police department maintain a greater presence at all Guilderland schools in the upcoming days.”

“The safety and security of our students is my highest priority,” said Wiles. “We take all incidents such as this seriously and will always err on the side of caution when it comes to our children.”

Even though this particular rumor centered around the high school, Wiles asks that parents at all of our schools discuss with their children the importance of being cautious with what rumors they share with their fellow students, as well as the importance of being open with information they should share with school officials.

“Please take time to discuss with your children the responsibility of letting an adult know of any potential concerns they may have or have heard of regarding any threatening individual or situation,” said Wiles. “This is never easy for students; however, it is probably one of the best sources of information to help maintain a safe school environment.”

If you have any questions or have information to share, please contact Dr. Wiles at 456-6200, ext. 3102 or Guilderland High School Principal Thomas Lutsic at 861-8591, ext. 1000.
