Music in Our Schools MonthGCSD celebrates Music In Our Schools Month this March

Feb. 28, 2014—March is Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM®), and the Guilderland Central School District is proud to announce a month full of events demonstrating excellence in music education.

Several middle school ensembles will perform at the Empire State Plaza on Friday, March 21. The Farnsworth Middle School Select Band (under the direction of Mrs. Alexis Ziomek), the FMS Chamber Strings (under the direction of Mrs. Kristy Dame) and the FMS 8th Grade Chorus (under the direction of Mrs. Nancy Casellini) will perform in the South Concourse at 12:25 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.

March 19 is the annual Cabaret at FMS, featuring the Jazz and Stage Bands from the Middle and High Schools. Students demonstrate their creativity through improvisation; the instantaneous creation of music in the moment. Spring concerts begin at the end of March with the 8th Grade Band, Chorus and 7th & 8th Grade Orchestras performing at FMS on March 25.

March also features the student theatrical productions with Farnsworth Middle School MASK presenting “The Sound of Music” from March 7-9, the High School Guilderland Players presenting “All Shook Up” from March 13-16 and Altamont Elementary School presenting their 5th grade musical “Suessical Jr." on March 28-29.

Other events in March include performances of “Billy Goats Gruff” by the Opera Saratoga at Westmere Elementary (March 3) and Guilderland Elementary (March 24) graciously funded by the Guilderland Music Parents and Friends Association. The FMS Select Choir will continue its community performances by singing the National Anthem at a Siena College basketball game on March 2.

Music In Our Schools Month is a nationwide event saluting excellence in music education. NAfME: The National Association for Music Education sponsors this annual event, which focuses national attention on the importance of music in our schools. “Music Makes Me ___!” is the official slogan for Music In Our Schools Month® 2014.

Participation in music classes provides lifelong benefits. Through singing, playing instruments, and composing, students learn to express themselves creatively. Studying music provides a deeper understanding of historical and cultural heritages. We invite you to witness excellence at every developmental stage of music education.
