Breaking Thru Barriers:
Inspiring Communication Between Parents and Teens

Feb. 13, 2015—On Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, Guilderland High School will play host to an important community event entitled, "Breaking Thru Barriers: Inspiring Communication Between Parents and Teens." Presented by a team of local organizations, this free event is the second in a series of customized prevention workshops/seminars for students and parents in the Capital District.

Breaking Thru Barriers will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the GHS new gymnasium* and is open to both residents and non-residents of the school district. The goal of the event is to inspire an open discussion between parents and teens on the impacts of alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs. The program is appropriate for middle and high school age students.

Throughout the night, attendees will learn about:

Recognizing risky behavior and gateway drugs

Parenting without hovering: Deterring substance use and abuse

Real stories from teens in recovery and their siblings

Local law enforcement: Consequences for teens caught with drugs

There will also be a resource fair with treatment/prevention information and giveaways.

While the formal program begins at 6 p.m., doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for dinner. Pizza, salad and beverages will be served free of charge to those in attendance. In addition, each student who bring a parent will be entered into a drawing to win two iPad Air tablets.

For more information about the event, please call (518) 465-5829.

*Note: Parking for this event will be in the back of the building, near the new gym. Please take the third driveway into campus (West Drive) off of School Road and follow the road around to the back.
