GCSD celebrates Music In Our Schools Month

March 5, 2015—March is Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSMĀ®), and the Guilderland Central School District is proud to announce a month full of events demonstrating excellence in music education.

Several middle school ensembles will perform at the Empire State Plaza on Tuesday, March 17. The Farnsworth Middle School Select Band (under the direction of Mrs. Alexis Ziomek) and the FMS Jazz Ensemble (under the direction of Mr. Jason Utter) will perform in the South Concourse at 12:25 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.

March 19 is the annual Cabaret at FMS, featuring the Jazz and Stage Bands from the Middle and High Schools. Students demonstrate their creativity through improvisation; the instantaneous creation of music in the moment. Spring concerts begin at the end of March with band, chorus and orchestra performances at Lynnwood Elementary on March 30 and Westmere Elementary on March 31.

March also features the student theatrical productions with Farnsworth Middle School MASK presenting “Mulan Jr.” from March 6-8, and the High School Guilderland Players presenting “Curtains” from March 12-15.

Other events in March include the 3rd Grade Instrument Night (March 11) for parents and students to explore the instrumental program beginning in 4th Grade, and the Student Composer Night (March 23) where composers of any age are invited to present and perform their original compositions. Both of these events will be held at Farnsworth Middle School beginning at 7 p.m.

Music In Our Schools Month is a nationwide event saluting excellence in music education. NAfME: The National Association for Music Education sponsors this annual event, which focuses national attention on the importance of music in our schools.

Participation in music classes provides lifelong benefits. Through singing, playing instruments, and composing, students learn to express themselves creatively. Studying music provides a deeper understanding of historical and cultural heritages. We invite you to witness excellence at every developmental stage of music education. Learn what’s happening in the music programs in your school and community!

For more information on any of the above events, please contact District Music Administrator Lori Hershenhart at 861-8591, ext. 1106.
