District sets 2014-15 tax rates

August 21, 2014—At its meeting on August 19, the Guilderland Central School District Board of Education adopted tax rates for the 2014-15 school year. Guilderland residents, who comprise approximately 93% of the district’s tax base, will pay $21.8362 per $1,000 of assessed value—an increase of .06 cents, or +0.27 percent, over the current year’s school taxes.

Tax rates for the remaining three towns that comprise the school district are as follows: residents in the Town of Bethlehem will pay $19.6518 per $1,000 assessed value; residents in the Town of New Scotland will pay $19.6518 per $1,000 assessed value; and residents in the Town of Knox will pay $31.6964 per $1,000 assessed value.

The tax rates differ among the towns because, as is often the case in school districts that span multiple municipalities, properties in different communities are often assessed at varying levels in relation to full market value. Every summer, the New York State Office of Real Property Services assigns an "equalization rate" for each town. This factor, applied to each town's total assessment, creates an assessment value that equates to full market value. This process is intended to ensure that each town is assessed their fair share of school taxes based on the market value of the properties within the town.

Final tax rates came in lower than projected during the May 2014 school budget vote, due to higher than anticipated assessment levels in the Town of Guilderland and a reassessment of property values in the Town of Bethlehem.

For more information on tax rate increases/decreases, please view the updated tax rate chart (by town). Tax bills will be mailed to all district residents by Labor Day, and are due by September 30 without penalty.
