Guilderland mourns the loss of two young students

Oct. 9, 2014—Earlier this morning, local police confirmed that two young students, a fifth grader and a second grader at Guilderland Elementary School, were among the victims of yesterday’s tragic crime on Western Avenue in the Town of Guilderland. Police have not yet released the names of the victims, pending notification of all next of kin, and so the district cannot share further details about the students at this time.

“Today is an unbearably sad day for our school community. We are devastated over the loss of these two young lives, and send our deepest condolences to their families,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marie Wiles.

Additional school counselors, psychologists, and social workers have been on hand all day at Guilderland Elementary to help support students, faculty, and staff in need. Support is also available throughout the district’s other six school buildings and will remain in place as long as needed.

“As a school district, our first obligation is to support the health and safety our students, faculty, and staff during this difficult time. We are all heartbroken by this tragedy, but we will work through this terrible loss together.”

A letter was sent home this afternoon to all parents of students attending Guilderland Elementary from Principal Allan Lockwood with additional information and support ideas. View the letter (PDF)

The district will continue to provide updates as they become available.
