GCSD celebrates Music in Our Schools Month
March 1, 2017—In celebration of
Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM®), the Guilderland School District is
proud to announce a month full of events demonstrating excellence in music
Musical performances are held all month long at the Empire State Plaza on the South Concourse. The NYSSMA All State Jazz Ensemble, including Guilderland’s own Joe Giordano (trombone), performs on March 6 at 11:30 a.m. The FMS Select Band (under the direction of Mrs. Alexis Ziomek), the FMS Jazz Ensemble (under the direction of Mr. Jason Utter) and the FMS Vocal Thunder (under the direction of Mrs. Nancy Casellini); will perform on March 16 at 11:30 a.m. The GHS Chamber Choir (under the direction of Mrs. Rae Teeter) will perform on March 21 at 12:25 p.m. These concerts are free and open to the public and serve to impart the importance of providing a comprehensive music education.
The annual Cabaret performance will be held at 7 p.m. on March 23 at FMS, featuring the jazz and stage Bands from the middle and high schools. Students will demonstrate their creativity through improvisation and the instantaneous creation of music in the moment.
March also features the student theatrical productions with FMS MASK presenting Oklahoma from March 10-12, and the high school's Guilderland Players presenting How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying from March 16-19.
Other events in March include the Grade 3 Instrument Night (March 21) -- for parents and students to explore the instrumental program beginning in fourth grade, and the Student Composer Night (March 22), where composers of any age are invited to present and perform their original compositions. Both of these events will be held at FMS beginning at 7 p.m.
Music In Our Schools Month is a nationwide event saluting excellence in music education. The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) sponsors this annual event, which focuses national attention on the importance of music in our schools.
Participation in music classes provides lifelong benefits. Through singing, playing instruments, and composing, students learn to express themselves creatively. Studying music provides a deeper understanding of historical and cultural heritages. We invite you to witness excellence at every developmental stage of music education.
