Information regarding NYS's annual Grades 3-8 English Language Arts and Mathematics tests

March 20, 2017—This spring, GCSD students in grades 3-8 will participate in annual statewide testing. The English Language Arts (ELA) test will be given March 28-30, and the Mathematics test will be administered May 2-4.

These tests are designed to measure how well students are mastering the learning standards that guide classroom instruction and help to ensure that students are on track to graduate from high school with the critical thinking, problem solving and reasoning skills needed for success in today's world.

In 2016, The New York State Education Department (NYSED) issued a memorandum regarding changes to the ELA and math assessments. The three main changes were:
Greater involvement of educators in the test development process;
Decrease in the number of test questions; and
A shift to untimed testing (students will have as long as they need to complete this spring’s grades 3-8 ELA/math exams).

New this year, some districts will be transitioning to computer-based testing, but GCSD is choosing to administer paper and pencil tests.
