Social media expert Chris Vollum returns to GCSD on Dec. 12

Nov. 18, 2016—From Facebook and Twitter to Instagram and SnapChat, social media is all around us—and our children. That is why now, more than ever, it is important to educate students and parents about the value of being good digital citizens.

“Social media apps and sites play a pivotal role both in and out of the educational setting,” said Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Demian Singleton. “It’s a priority for us to make sure that our students are well-equipped to use of these tools in a responsible manner.”

To that end, the Guilderland Central School District is pleased to welcome internationally recognized educator and advocate Chris Vollum, back to speak. Vollum is set to share his expertise on the power of social media in the lives of today's learners on Monday, Dec. 12. His program, “Social Media Fitness,” will be held at 7 p.m. in the high school LGI.

“Social Media Fitness” will focus on helping parents develop clarity, confidence, joy and new skills into the world of social media. Topics to be covered include:

How students use social media;

The 5 prominent social platforms;

Become “Googleable;”

Build a sustainable reputation;

How students are evaluated online;

Reduce student anxiety and stress;

Increase online confidence and skill;

 Achieve balance; less screen time.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their mobile devices and tablets for hands-on learning. Following his evening presentation, Vollum will work with students and teachers in each of the district’s seven school buildings throughout the week of Dec. 12.

With storytelling and real-time social media demonstrations, the interactive presentation encourages students and parents to think critically and to successfully navigate their 24/7 connected world. We hope that you will join us!
