Bring on the SNOW!!!

UPDATE: Tuesday, March 21st:

Just a week after the chaperones enjoyed a beautiful Saturday on the slopes of Sugarbush, the snowgods have decided to bless the mountains of upstate (the REAL upstate) New York and Vermont. Many places have picked up anywhere from 2" to 18" of snow overnight while Stowe claims to have over 2 feet of new snow over the past two days! As I always say, even though it looks brown and ugly down here in Guilderland, the mountains are coated in powder snow. Here are a few picts to prove it to you. So quit being lazy and get out there and make some turns!

Fresh powder at Stowe - 3-19-08

Fresh powder at Sugarbush - 3-16-08 (a day after the chaperones trip!)

Fresh powder at Killington 3-21-08, yep, two days before Easter!

The deck & backyard of Mr. Freeman's parents house, near Lake George - only an hour north of G-land.  3-21-08

UPDATE: Tuesday, March 11th:

Ok, so you're having a hard time justifying sitting on the ski club bus this Saturday for almost two hours to ski on what, dirt? Hmm. Well let me open your eyes to Vermont. You may have slush and mud in your yard but trust me, the ski areas in Vermont have an absolute TON of snow! While we got buckets of rain they got tractor trailers of snow. Here are the numbers at a few resorts:

Stowe:
Season Total Snowfall - 321" (that's almost 27 feet of snow)
Snow last 7 days - 9"-14"
Trails open - 99
Base Depth - 38"-78" (yep, 3 - 5-1/2 feet)
Base/Summit Temperatures - 17/10 degrees F

Sugarbush:
Season Total Snowfall - 244"
Snow Last 72 Hrs - 4"
Trails open - 111 (All of 'em!)
Base Depth - 26" - 68"
Base/Summit Temperatures - 29/15 degrees F

Pico:
Season Total Snowfall - 246"
Snow Last 7 days - 12"
Trails open - 48
Base Depth - 40" - 54"

Okemo:
Season Total Snowfall - not reported
Snow Last 72 Hrs - 0"
Trails open - 117
Base Depth - 52" - 60"
Base/Summit Temperatures - 21/15 degrees F

It doesn't take much to realize that there is still plenty of snow left on the trails (and in the woods) in Vermont. With anywhere from 1-3 feet of snow in the woods still I don't think any warm weather or rain will create bare spots on the mountain. Don't believe me? Check out some of the pictures on the resort websites. You can find their links under "links" at the left of this page.

UPDATE: Wednesday, February 6th:

It's February, where's the snow?
No snow in your yard? I still have some piles. This definitely is NOT what winter is suppose to be like! Thankfully after the pouring rain overnight we are looking at the possibility of 2" - 5" of snow overnight tonight.

But while it has been pouring here in Guilderland it certainly is still winter up north. Every ski area from Gore to Pico, up to Whiteface and over to Sugarbush & Stowe have received anywhere from 2" up to 14" over the past two days. Sugarbush did have a period of rain yesterday but that has all changed back to snow... and lots of it. The forecast is for up to 12" more overnight! Talk about a powder day. Here's the proof...

Stowe Pow, 2-6-08

 Jealous?

UPDATE: Thursday, January 24th:

OUR UPS AND OUR DOWNS!
Well, winter has shown us it's worst. By that I mean 60 degree weather and brown spots all over the place. As a matter of fact, before this afternoon when we had a little bit of accumulation I was starting to get very depressed as I looked out the window. What the heck happened to all of our snow? In December we were basking in close to 18" of snow on the ground. It felt like Mother Nature was making up for last year. Now, all of a sudden the grass is showing and the snow is almost all gone. Our weather is simply cold and dry. Thankfully ski areas have plenty of water and snow guns to keep their trails covered with fresh 'snow' but it definitely doesn't make up for the lack of snow on the ground here. I hope the rumor is true that January is the cold month (with the exception of the indian summer week) while February is the snow month! Once again, and now it's more important than ever, Think Snow!

UPDATE: Monday, December 31st:

HAPPY NEW YEAR'S EVE!!!
That's right. 2007 went out like a lion. Well, at least early this morning it did. 10" of fresh snow to make a nice base for what 2008 will bring us tomorrow... that's right, MORE SNOW!!! The last I have heard they are estimating 6" or more! Sounds like the Gore trip will be fantastic! Enjoy the day, and the new year. Think Snow!

The same 10" on my tree.

UPDATE: Thursday, December 13th:

Holy Cow! 6" of snow and it's still coming down at 7pm. This definitely makes a great blanket for the trails at Okemo on Saturday! And what's that I hear, even more snow on Sunday? Sounds like this year is definitely better than last!

If you signed up for the Okemo trip I guarantee you some of the best conditions we've ever experienced! You'll be telling your friends you skied at SNOKEMO this weekend. Looks like the Farmer's Almanac was right on. Let's hope that this weather pattern continues for the rest of the season. Oh, the best part? It's not even Winter yet! Just think of what the conditions will be like if this continues. Enjoy the picts below and, as always, Think Snow!

UPDATE: Wednesday, November 28th:

Just a quick update to let you know what has happened over the past couple of weeks. Many northeaster ski areas have opened for the season, including Bromley (an area that has a hard time opening with more than 2 trails) with six trails top to bottom! Way up north, Jay Peak looks like it should in the middle of winter, not November 27th. Stowe has received 39" of snow so far this year with 6" falling last night. Guess the picture below pretty much tells the story. Okemo currently has the most open terrain in New England with 32 trails while Mount Snow has 22 and Killington has 30 trails open. Let's not forget about two other ski areas that we travel to, Gore Mountain has 6 trails open and Sugarbush has 10.

There is no doubt that the ski season is upon us. Let's not waste an opportunity, get out there and get some skiing in! Remember last year? And what's this, a possible storm in our forecast for Sunday night into Monday? Do I smell snowday? Sure they say we may get some rain out of this storm but I doubt the higher elevations will see anything other than frozen stuff. Currently the forecast is for around 6" of snow here in the Albany area.

Don't forget to do your snow dance and, as always, Think Snow!

UPDATE: Friday, November 9th:

OK, so they got the forecast wrong. Since when should we believe what we hear on the weather report anyway?

The Fake Stuff. That's what we got. Mount Snow opens TOMORROW! The first in the East. They don't have the real White Stuff but they definitely have the man-made variety.
As for other ski areas in the East, take a look at Stowe. They claim to have picked up 10" of snow over the past few days. That's probably at the top of the mountain but boy those pictures sure look sweet!

Mount Snow pours on the fake stuff...

but it sure does look nice!

What a beautiful shot of Stowe after 10".

UPDATE: Tuesday, November 6th:

The White Stuff. That's what we're after. And that's what's in our forecast. Maybe it's just flurries but it's still snow. Actually, I did see a few flakes falling from the sky today. It definitely wasn't rain, that's for sure. And I have a witnesses too.

I almost forgot to mention, Buffalo was in the news today. They currently have 2"-3" of snow with more on the way. Yes, it's lake effect snow but it's still white! They could see up to 1' of snow ending tomorrow morning.

Enjoy the images below, rounded up from the sites mentioned, and all taken over the past four days from the various resorts. Think Snow!

UPDATE: Saturday, November 3rd:

So now we can actually say that the first snowflakes of the year are in the future. It looks like Jason was right. There is a 60% chance of rain or snow showers on Tuesday this week. We might actually see some white falling from the sky.
That reminds me, to date we have 20 members signed up for the club. We still need quite a few more so we can afford to go on our trips. If you haven't turned in your form yet please do so as soon as possible. And as always, Think Snow!

UPDATE: Wednesday, October 31st:

And now it's coming our way! We have our first snow of the year in the forecast. That's right, Jason Gough of News Channel 13 has placed the word 'snow' in his forecast for next week. Unfortunately it's a week away but his forecast says snow!!! It's coming soon and there's little doubt left that the snow is on it's way. Get your skis and boards shined up!

Here it is:

"We'll be pretty chilly by Tuesday and Wednesday with some showers...both rain & snow...possible."

UPDATE: Wednesday, October 10th:

A quick update to let you know that Arapahoe Basin Ski Area in Colorado opened for skiing today! This is the earliest date that the resort has opened in it's 51 year history!

And since we're on the subject of snow, keep your eye on the weather reports for this weekend. I'm hearing rumors of the possibility of SNOW in the higher elevations of the Adirondacks! That's means within a couple of hours of here they might be getting snow! It's coming, I can smell it!

UPDATE: Friday, September 21st:

Just spending a quiet Friday evening browsing the internet and I happen to come across the Farmer's Almanac website. So after a few minutes I clicked on the weather forecast for New England as well as the Mid-Atlantic states (that would be us). Let's just say that after reading it I was grinning from ear to ear. It's like music to my ears. Snow, snow, and more snow. I just hope they are right. For those of you who like the current weather we are having, enjoy it while you can. I see white flakes and blue skies in our future!

Click on the map for the Northeast forecast!

UPDATE: Tuesday, September 18th:

Mmmm, snow. Gotta love it. Colorado has received their first upper mountain snowfall of the year. Again, I have The Weather Channel on as I type (must not be anything good on TV on Tuesdays) and they are forecasting snow in California as well. Our morning temperatures have dipped down into the lower forties. Unfortunately we'll have a warmup the rest of this week but a cooling trend may start by the middle of next week. Hopefully this will be the last time we see 80 degree temps until April in '08! Start practicing your snowdance, we'll need your help in a few months!

UPDATE: Tuesday, September 11th:

Funny how some things happen when we're headed back to school. The leaves on the trees start turning, the cooler temperatures start creeping in, rain in September starts feeling colder, and The Weather Channel forecasts snow for Montana and Wyoming.
Yes that's right, as I am sitting here typing, The Weather Channel is on my TV flashing up freeze warnings in Minnesota and snow warnings in the higher elevations of Montana and Wyoming. Hmm, I smell snow!
Keep your eyes here for more updates on the flying flakes... and once again, THINK SNOW!

UPDATE: Tuesday, July 10th:

I thought it would be a good idea to post some more news for you in hope of cooling down your day a bit. Currently it's like a sauna outside, 90 degrees and VERY humid. Not exactly what I call fun. Snow & winter will be here soon so we can hit the slopes once a gain. Here's a picture that was taken last night. It's in Argentina but hey, it's snow in July! It's the first snowfall there since 1918!

UPDATE: Monday, June 4th:

Are you like me? Looking out my window I'm sitting here wishing all of this rain were snow and I could click in to my skis and take a few runs. Beats sweating outside in the 90 degree, 90% humidity weather that Summer brings. Makes me nauseous just thinking about it!
Remember that Winter, and the cooler weather, actually last many more months than the dog days of summer. Kinda makes me wish that we had Winter off instead of summer. At least we could ski mid-week!
Enjoy the rest of the sultry summer season. I'll be dreaming of powder.

UPDATE: Wednesday, April 4th:

Well it snowed on Valentines Day and St. Patty's Day! Hmm, 2-4 inches are possible tonight too! Hey, it's close enough to Easter. Isn't it amazing? See, Winter wasn't short, it was just delayed. Now we can go out and get in some skiing in the morning, play a round of golf in the afternoon, and then stop by the Battenkill on the way home for some fly fishing. Aaaah, isn't life grand?

UPDATE: Tuesday, March 20th:

Well it snowed on Valentines Day and now on St. Patty's Day! Will it snow on Easter too??? We'll just have to wait and see!
I picked up 15" at my house on Saturday. It was nice to see after that 60 degree weather ate all the snow from V-day away. I was able to get some skiing and some snowshoeing in before Monday. Now I'm just waiting for what may be my final ski trip for the 06-07 ski season on Saturday to Okemo. The weather is suppose to be warmer as they are predicting highs around 42 up there. Should be a nice spring ski day... dress light!

UPDATE: Wednesday, March 14th:

It's currently 48 degrees outside at 6pm. I believe the high today was around 58. More than a foot of snow has melted away in my yard and the rain has moved in. This definitely is starting to look like the end of winter 07.

But Wait! To my surprise the weatherman just said that the weather service has issued a winter storm watch for eastern Mass. What's better? He believes that they will also issue a watch, or even a warning, for eastern NY in the next day or two. The current projected forecast is for snow! That's right, cold temps and snow! See, mother nature sure does know how to mess with people's heads.

What does this mean for Okemo? Well, it looks like the temps are not suppose to get above 37 for quite a while. That means the snow that is going to fall on Saturday will stick around for a while. Just hope that the temps stay cool enough on the mountain so the snow doesn't get too soft. Looks like Okemo will have plenty of snow... and some freshies come next Saturday!

UPDATE: Sunday, March 11th:

So the temperatures in the Capital District climbed up into the 40's this weekend. A few inches of snow has melted away. There may even be a few brown or green spots on your lawn if the wind blew the snow a bit before it settled. I'm also hearing that in a day or two the temps may make it up into the 50's! Could this be the end? Umm, NO!

That's right, starting on Thursday this week the temperatures will be dropping with cooler air moving in and the possibility of scattered snow showers. Come on, you think Mother Nature is going to send only one storm our way this year? That would be depressing now wouldn't it? I'm not saying it's going to snow but I am saying that the mountains at Okemo have a large enough base on their slopes to act as a refrigerator and keep the snow right where it belongs.

So don't worry about a few days in the 50's. The snow can handle it. We'll be skiing on the 24th while basking in the late March sun. After all, it's Spring Skiing!

UPDATE: Thursday, March 1st:

Did someone say SNOW???

The forecast for the capital district tonight is between 3"-6" of snow followed by sleet and possibly freezing rain creeping in by morning. Sounds like another snowday to me! Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Bromley and other Vermont ski areas, as well as Gore and Whiteface are expecting between 6" - 16" of snow tonight and into the day tomorrow. The rain/freezing rain line looks like it will stay far enough south so that they will no pick up any ice. Looks like a powder day of skiing at Bromley!!! Think Snow!

UPDATE: Tuesday, February 27th:

Well, I'm not sure where you were over the vacation week but my guess is that you weren't at Stowe. For a vacation week the liftlines were empty! And the skiing? Let's just say that with over 4' of snow from the Valentines Day storm as well as a few smaller storms they had plenty of snow for me to ski. I even had the opportunity to find a few freshies at various places around the mountain. I had tired legs after skiing Nosedive, Hayride, and Liftline a few times. If you ever have a chance to get up to Stowe, do it! It's sure to be a place you'll want to go back to. Enjoy the pics.

One of my favorite views of Mansfield from the Quad.

UPDATE: Thursday, February 15th:

Cupid was nice to us this year. Not only did he give us TWO days off of school but he also gave us 21" of powder. NOW it's winter! With the blowing snow the total in my yard was reduced to about 19" overnight but I don't care. At least it's better than brown.

And what can I say about the Groundhog? I never trusted those little fellas' anyway. As a golfer we tend to dislike the groundhog. So Phil, go back into your hole and come out in May... when winter MIGHT be over!

It's a nice sunny day today. Get outside and play! Just make sure to dress warm because it's going to be a cold one.

Where are you headed for the vacation week? Okemo? Stratton? Killington? Sugarbush? Stowe? Jay Peak? Hmm. From Stratton to Sugarbush they've received between 24" - 36". Stowe and Jay picked up between 36" - 48" of fresh snow. If you're headed to sunny Florida, Aruba, the Bahamas, etc... I'm sorry. You'll miss out. It's Winter! I'm headed to Stowe. Enjoy... and thanks for Thinking Snow!

Looking down my driveway.

Snow total at the stake - in my yard.

UPDATE: Tuesday, February 13th:

Yea, that's right... Bring on the SNOW!!!

Mother Nature has proven that Winter is still in full force with 12" - 36" of the white stuff falling starting tonight and lasting into Thursday! I smell a snowday coming... can you???

UPDATE: Thursday, February 8th:

In case you didn't hear Oswego County is under a state of Emergency due to over 7' (yes, that's 84") of snow over the past 5 days. As if that's not bad enough they expect another 2' to fall over the weekend! School has been closed all week in the city of Oswego, Mexico, Pulaski and other cities in the area. The worst part? That part of New York is flat! No mountains.
Because it's lake effect snow we won't see much and neither will the ski areas in Vermont. However, being that the snow event has made the national news I figured I'd post a few picts here of what it looks like anyway. Hey, at least we can dream of a white front yard. Enjoy, and as always, Think Snow!

UPDATE: Friday, February 2nd:

It's Friday evening, 6:30pm. I just had to post some picts showing you what is happening outside right now! It's snowing!!! Granted it's not going to amount to much but if you are on the trip to Pico tomorrow your going to be in for a treat! Besides all of their manmade snow and countless inches of natural snow (trail base is 20" - 30" deep), Pico expects to get 3" - 5" by morning! Our first powder day of 2007. Not much but based on what we have received so far this winter I'll take it! Enjoy the picts below. I just took them outside my front door. Mr. Phil didn't see his shadow? Who needs a groundhog anyway? Winter is here and it will make a statement... soon. Think snow!

UPDATE: Friday, January 26th:

So, are you enjoying the cold? A bit windy but at least ski areas can make snow. I would rather enjoy temps in the 20's and a few Nor'easters to give us some snowpack. It's been tough!
Pico has picked up a few inches of snow over the past week (they actually got between 10" and 14" last weekend). Here's a pict to get you in the spirit. This was taken on Tuesday after they received 4" of freshies. Think snow!!!

UPDATE: Sunday, January 21st:

The snowgods have delivered. Even though Albany still has yet to receive any measurable snow the ski areas in Vermont have been getting several inches of snow over the past week or two. Pico, our next destination on February 3rd, has picked up 10" in the past day and almost doubled their trail count to 19 trails! For a smaller ski area with only 50 trails (a few are short connectors), 19 trails represents the majority of their skiable acreage. Sugarbush, our February 10th trip, is operating at 100% capacity! Every trail is now open and they are running 13 of 16 lifts. I'm sure by Feb. 10th they will be turning on the other three lifts. Be sure to get your ski trip forms in early to guarantee a spot on the bus! Keep an eye out on this site to find out when the trip forms are available.

UPDATE: Wednesday, January 10th:

THE SNOW HAS ARRIVED!!! Snow has been flying around the Northeast for two days now and more is on the way. Current totals as of today... Jay Peak 12", Stowe 6", Sugarbush 7", and Pico 2". Sure it's to our north but I'll take it, won't you? This weekend looks to be a bit cooler than originally expected (some weathermen had Sunday @ 60 degrees!) but they are still calling for a mix of precip. Hopefully we'll get more snow than rain. We can only hope. Here are some picts of today's beautiful weather in northern Vermont!!! Enjoy... and go celebrate winter. :-P

Hmm, I've said this all along!

UPDATE: Tuesday, January 9th:

Just another quick update for everyone. Obviously 71 degree temps on Saturday didn't bring the feeling of winter to the Northeast. However, change is on the way, if you can wait a week. This week's forecast shows scattered snow showers for the next three days followed by an increase in temps and rain/snow mix for the weekend. Nope, not a good forecast for MLK weekend! BUT... starting on Monday the temps will be falling which means good snowmaking temps and the possibility that any precipitation will be of the frozen variety! Oh, that means SNOW is possible for us next week! Unfortunately mother nature can't even forecast the weather so we'll have to stay tuned to see what she may or may not bring. Let's hope that we'll get some fresh natural snow for our Mount Snow trip!

UPDATE: Thursday, December 28th:

Ok, so life really isn't fair! Denver picked up 2' of snow a week ago and now, seven days later, they are looking at yet another 2'! When will Mother Nature cut us a break and drop some fresh pow? I'm waiting as I'm sure you all are too. No picts this week, I'm too depressed.
Hope your break is going well. Pray for snow!!!

UPDATE: Thursday, December 21st:

I'm bummed. What about you? Feel the same way? It's the first day of Winter and we're at 39 degrees (oh, by the way, it's 9:30pm). Normal temps for this time of night are what, about 20 degrees?
I'm also jealous. Of Colorado that is. 4 feet + of snow in the past two days? What's that all about? Denver picked up 2 feet. I realize that the closures and delays are due to the snow but man oh man bring some of that white gold up here where people want it! And for those of you who don't like snow and live in the Northeast... MOVE SOUTH!!!

Here are some picts of the storm in Colorado to make you jealous...

UPDATE: Sunday, December 10th:

So how is Okemo doing? Just great! They now have 32 trails open and more on the way. And have you been watching the weather report? Forecasters are closely watching a Nor'easter that could be headed our way on Friday bringing us snow! What does that mean for us? A powder day of skiing at Okemo! Do your snow dance!

UPDATE: Wednesday, December 6th:

12" of new snow? Yep, that's what northern Vermont (and NY) picked up over the past 48 hours. And the best part? Another foot is expected tomorrow!!! Winter has finally arrived! Okemo has been making snow for the past five days and there is no doubt they'll be up to 50 or more trails by next weekend. Oh, they had 13 trails open today (more than triple the number they had only three days ago!) Did you know that a snowgun can shovel out 15" of snow in 24 hrs? That means that Okemo can cover five trails a day! I'm ready, are you?

UPDATE: Friday, December 1st:

Ok, so it's the first day of December and it's getting warmer as I type. The weathermen said that the temps were suppose to drop tonight. I'm waiting!

So, on to the news. No snow news, just some important club news for those of you who are reading this.

Of greatest importance is the Senior Ski Club Meeting next Thursday, December 7th during activity period in the cafeteria. It's a mandatory meeting for all Senior Ski Club member and our only meeting of the year. You will get important information about the club.

Secondly I'd like to point out that the 2007 Ski Club Shirt orders will be starting on Thursday the 7th also. Forms will be handed out during the meeting. You can view the examples of the screen printed & our new embroidered ski club logo option here.

UPDATE: Wednesday, November 29th:

Yea, did I say colder temperatures? What a difference a week makes! Tomorrow is suppose to be 66 degrees. And it's almost December! Doesn't sound like winter to me. Come on guys, where's that snow dance I asked you to do?
Colder temps should be back by Saturday when highs are expected to be in the low 40's. Hopefully this will be the start of real winter!
No picts to show because there's nothing going on here. Out west is another story. They've been getting pounded with snow. Roads are closed, wind is whipping. And the best part, ski areas are open. Oh what I would give to live out there right now!
Don't worry, it'll be here soon... just do you snow dance!
See you next Thursday during Activity Period for our meeting.

UPDATE: Monday, November 20th:

Finally! Some colder temperatures so that the ski areas can pick up the slack of Mother Nature. Forecasts for the week show nights in the 20's for Vermont. If this holds true then ski areas will have their snowguns going as long as they can. Looks like Okemo is getting ready for the Senior Ski Club trip on Dec. 16th!

UPDATE: Wednesday, November 15th:

Ok, so we've had a long spell of dreary, miserable weather. Not cold enough to snow, not dry enough to play golf. Things are about to change. After tomorrow's 60+ degree weather things are going downhill from there. Forecasters are expecting a front to blow through bringing temps that are perfect for snowmaking on the peaks. Usually on Turkey Day a few resorts in the East open for the faithful trying to lay some tracks in November.

Want snow? You'll have to go West. Parts of Utah picked up 22" of snow over the past four days! Many ski areas in the West are open and more are looking to start up their lifts in the next week. Don't worry, it'll be here soon!

UPDATE: Friday, November 3rd:

I saw flake, I saw flakes! My 9th period class saw what we believed were our first flakes falling from the sky today outside FMS! Earlier in the day we did see what appeared to be either rain, snow, sleet, or hail but it wasn't until 2:45pm that a snow squall hit us. Again, not much snow but it did make me more anxious to head on over to the Ski & Snowboard show where I spoke with the reps from the different ski areas we go to during the season. I gave them our name and told them approximately when we would be going to their area. They told me they were going to guarantee perfect conditions for us this year!

UPDATE: Thursday, November 2nd:

Well, we finally got what we wished for! SNOW!!! OK, so we didn't get dumped on, but towns in and around the Capital Region picked up some snow to dust the ground and coat their cars. No, I didn't see any flakes but I could see the cars coming down off the hill (read Berne) covered with an inch or two of snow.
Many ski areas in Vermont have fired up their snowmaking equipment in preparation of the upcoming season. Give it a couple more weeks and we'll be seeing the flakes as fast as a high speed quad! I'm ready, are you?
Oh, and by the way, starting tomorrow and running through Sunday is the 45th Annual Ski & Snowboard Expo at the Empire State Plaza! Click here for more info!
Here's a pict to get you psyched for the season... Taken at Stowe, Vt (of course) on Halloween... SNOWDAY!!!

UPDATE: Friday, October 27th:

If you've been keeping up with Skiing News you know that Mr. Freeman's favorite mountain is Stowe. Check out the pictures below of where he'd rather be right now! Stowe received 20" of snow over the past week and from the sounds of this weekends forecast their in for a dumping. He may have to take a road trip to Northern Vermont soon! Pre-season skiing requires a set of healthy lungs (and legs) because the chairlifts aren't in operation. But the price can't be beat... It's all FREE! Enjoy the ride.

UPDATE: Thursday, October 26th:

What happened over the past few days? A lot! Most recently almost 2' of snow fell in Colorado closing several schools and tying up traffic on highways. Closer to home residents of Duanesburg saw their first flakes! Not enough snow to coat the ground but lake effect snow blew in from Lake Ontario on Tuesday and Wednesday. As I looked up over the hill toward Berne I could see the flakes flying! Yep, real live flakes in Albany and Schenectady counties. Pretty soon it'll be in your backyard and at your favorite ski area! Think snow!!!

UPDATE: Sunday, October 22nd:

Nothing makes Mr. Freeman's day more than surfing on over to his favorite mountain's website (Stowe.com), viewing their picture gallery and seeing pictures of Stowe's first snowfall of the year. Well, maybe not their first flakes but their first coating of the white stuff. Winter is coming and I say Bring It On! Enjoy!

UPDATE: Friday, October 20th:

It's getting closer! Here's a radar image taken today at 4:00pm. Watertown picked up 5" of snow! Better get your skis and boards out and make sure everything still fits. It'll be here before you know it.

UPDATE: Wednesday, October 18th:

Actually this is an update from Friday, October 13th. I was too preoccupied with the snow in Buffalo that I forgot to notice that Arapahoe Basin in Colorado was the first ski area in the nation to open for the season! Many other ski areas in Colorado have opened in the past five days as well. Hmmm, let's hope it spreads to the East soon!

Here's a happy skier at Arapahoe:

UPDATE: Friday, October 13th:|

HA! Did I say 1.3"? Oops, I meant 24"! That's right, Buffalo woke up to their worst Friday the 13th ever! They got dumped on. 2' of snow. Talk about a snow day! Unfortunately for us this is only lake effect snow so we won't be receiving any of it. Be prepared, however, snow is in our future! Happy Friday!

UPDATE: Thursday, October 12th:|

Buffalo, NY receives 1.3" of snow with more on the way!
Many Western New Yorkers Caught Off Guard by Early Snowfall
There is something extremely unusual for this time of year - a lake effect snow warning. The snow has been flying since mid-afternoon.

Is that white stuff I see? I smell snow!

UPDATE: Tuesday, September 26th:

This picture was taken on the top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire (the tallest mountain in the Eastern US) on September 21st. Is that white I see? Must be signs of things to come!

UPDATE: Thursday, September 21st:

More snow on the way! Residents of the Rockies are bracing for up to another foot of snow tonight and into tomorrow. Kind of makes you want to move out west, eh? Look below for picts taken over this past weekend.

Oh, and don't worry. Pretty soon it will be falling in your backyard! We are due for a decent winter after the Snowmeiser took the past two years off.

Think Snow!
