Physical Education Department Guidelines
General
While attending Farnsworth Middle School
all students must attend courses of instruction in physical
education. (New York Education Law)

Attendance
All students shall attend and participate
in all classes for which they are registered.
Attendance means being physically active for the duration of
the class. Participation means being actively involved
in the activity as prescribed by the instructor. Top

Dress Code
While attending and participating
in Physical Education classes, students are expected to
dress appropriately for the activity. In most cases, this
means shorts, a T-shirt, socks and sneakers that tie or
velcro. In the interest of pupil
safety, it shall be the policy of this department that
students shall not wear any form of jewelry while participating. Jewelry includes rings, hanging
earrings, facial piercings, watches and bracelets. Hats may not be worn
during class.

Students who are unprepared for Physical Education:

Extramural
(Sports Club) Students in 7th
and 8th grade who wish to pursue further organized
experiences in various sports may do so by joining a sports
club. Sports clubs meet from 4:05-5:30 on selected days
(usually 2 to 3 days per week) and
involve higher levels of organization and instruction than
that found at the intramural level. Students practice and
compete against other area schools. There are no tryouts and
no sport physical is required, although a permission is

of page Intramurals
Students in 6th, 7th, and
8th grade at FMS have the opportunity to participate in the
intramural sports program. Intramurals are an outgrowth of the instructional program and
involve activities which permit further skill and knowledge
growth. Students will normally meet during activity period
(3:20 to 4:05 p.m.) on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. A
permission slip is not required to participate. Click

Top of page Interscholastic
sports Students in
7th and 8th grade are eligible to participate in
interscholastic sports, which involve competitions against
other area schools. Tryouts are required, and daily
practices will be held after school. A sports physical is
required and students must sign a code of conduct agreement.

progress in Physical Education shall be reported on the
Student Evaluation Form. Areas to be evaluated on a unit

Top of page Locks
and Lockers Students
are assigned an individual storage basket (sharing not
permitted). Students are required to provide their own combination
lock. The physical education staff will engrave the
students' name on their lock and also record all
combinations. Students are responsible for keeping their
lock combination secret, and staff may take away the right
of a student to use a locker or basket if the student cannot
demonstrate responsibility in the locker room. Medicals Students
who are in school must participate in Physical Education.
Students may be excused for a maximum of three days upon
receipt of a written note from a parent or legal guardian.
For periods of time longer than three days, a doctor's note

Education teachers plan on maximally utilizing the outdoor
time available to expedite planned outdoor units of
instruction. Students are expected to be prepared for class
with proper outdoor clothing when appropriate. Top of page Back
