Examples of Student Work

                          Weaving Research into Creative Writing

The following piece is an example of student work, the result of a collaborative research project designed by Molly Fanning (Gr.7 LA teacher) and Mary Jeanne Dicker (Librarian).

 Students learned to:

  • Identify the elements of historical fiction (character, setting, plot, movement through time, change).
  • Develop keywords to access information.
  • Search databases using Boolean operators.
  • Read and use sources competently including web evaluation.
  • Interview an expert on the time period.
  • Take effective notes.
  • Write an author's note.
  • Prepare a bibliography.
  • Use research notes to create an historical fiction story with authentic settings.
  • Use writer's notebook to develop other elements of historical fiction.
  • Have broader appreciation of a historic time period.
