Weaving Research into Creative Writing
The following piece is
an example of student work, the result of a collaborative research project
designed by Molly Fanning (Gr.7 LA teacher) and Mary
Jeanne Dicker (Librarian).
Students learned to:
- Identify the
elements of historical fiction (character,
setting, plot, movement through time, change).
- Develop keywords to
access information.
- Search databases
using Boolean operators.
- Read and use sources
competently including web evaluation.
- Interview an expert
on the time period.
- Take effective
notes.
- Write an author's
note.
- Prepare a
bibliography.
- Use research notes
to create an historical fiction story with
authentic settings.
- Use writer's
notebook to develop other elements of historical
fiction.
- Have broader
appreciation of a historic time period.
