Technology Education

Technology Education at the middle school level is an introductory course that examines a multitude of technologies that exist in our world. New York State requires one full year of technology education by the end of the 8th grade year. At FMS we now offer three, half-year courses at the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade levels.

Sixth Grade Program
Introduction to Technology - Part I

Students will participate in technology education for 20 weeks (either from Sept. to Jan. or Jan. to June). Units of study for the 6th grade course include the following:

Computer Labs
Keyboarding - UltraKey Software
Computer Skills - File structure, Respectful use of school computers
Microsoft Office - Including MS Word, MS Excel, & MS PowerPoint
I-Safe - Personal Safety - Digital citizenship, Safety, Security
I-Safe - Cyber Community - Netiquette, Cyber bullying
Library Literacy - Effective internet searches, Website evaluation, Periodical Databases, Bibliographies
Computer Programming - MicroWorlds LOGO software

Technology Labs
Manufacturing Technology - Tool & Machine use/safety
Paxton Patterson Modules - Flight Technology Module
Integrated Technology - GPS activity *if time allows

NASA for Students. Check up on current missions, play some space related games, or just browse cool images of space technology at NASA's official website.
ISS/Shuttle Sightings. See when the Space Station and Shuttle are passing overhead in our area!
NASA Spinoffs. Learn about different everyday items that have been developed through the efforts of NASA.
NASA's Air-Compressed Rocket. Check out NASA's simulated compressed air rocket online!
Build Your Own. Ok, so you like launching rockets. Here's your chance to build your own compressed air rocket launcher. Just keep in mind to build and use this launcher under adult supervision only!

 

Seventh Grade Program
Introduction to Technology - Part II

Students in 7th grade will participate in one or more of the following hands on activities during their time in technology:

PC Draft - CAD software
Bridge/Tower Project
Hydraulic Crane Project
Solar Cooker Project

Also included in the 7th grade curriculum are the Paxton Patterson Modules. Students will complete at least two of the modules in the labs in 7th grade. A description of the modules can be found below.

 

Eighth Grade Program
Introduction to Technology - Part III


Students in 8th grade will participate in one or more of the following hands on activities during their time in technology:

PC Draft - CAD software
Marble Mania

Also included in the 8th grade curriculum are the Paxton Patterson Modules. Students will complete at least two of the modules in the labs in 8th grade. A description of the modules can be found below.

Modular Labs Make A Difference!

The modular labs in the FMS technology education department are designed to facilitate learning in a multitude of technologies. Designed by the Paxton/Patterson company, the labs contain 14 different technological areas. Students may choose modules in the lab that interest them.
