Scenario
A
fifth grade teacher can use this activity to introduce the
use of various technology tools and software programs to
enhance established curriculum and to meet the NETS*S.
As
part of the Everyday Mathematics Curriculum in fifth
grade, students are taught about rectangular arrays and how
to use multiplication number models to represent them. Lesson 1.2 in the Everyday Math Curriculum presents an
opportunity for students to gather arrays for an “Array
Museum.” Using
digital cameras, students can pair up in teams to find
“real world” examples of arrays in and around the school
building. Pictures
taken can be imported into an iPhoto slideshow
for students to evaluate and create multiplication number
models from. The
slideshow can be viewed using a projector or TV/iTView.
Students can then select music for the slideshow and
then save it as a QuickTime movie to share with other fifth
grade classrooms. The
movie can be shared by burning a CD or saving it to a shared
network folder. Other fifth grade classrooms can evaluate and respond to the
arrays found and perhaps create their own slideshow to
share.
