Scenario

A third grade teacher can use this activity to introduce the use of various technology tools and software programs to enhance established curriculum and to meet the NETS*S.

Third grade classes in Guilderland are expected to study the countries of Brazil, China and Kenya in order to have a shared base knowledge of varied world communities. As part of this unit of study, children are often conducting research using library resources and the Internet.

Modeling responsible computer use and Internet searching techniques, the teacher can introduce World Book Online (an online subscription purchased for use by staff and students at school and at home.) Using a projector for whole group viewing, teachers should spend some time helping the students become familiar with this online encyclopedia.

Features that teachers may want to point out are:

  • search results list
  • list of encyclopedia articles
  • content overview (current events, maps, tables, sounds, pictures, research guides, special reports, videos and animation)
Students should be encouraged to take their time to read the information provided on the results screen and make good choices about what article citations to read.  Once in the article, students should be encouraged to use the Article Contents box as a “clickable” Table of Contents. Students should use the attached Country Study packet and as an opportunity for strengthening their note-taking skills.
