Scenario
A
third grade teacher can use this activity to introduce the
use of various technology tools and software programs to
enhance established curriculum and to meet the NETS*S.
Third grade classes in Guilderland are required to
have a shared reading of the book, Wingwalker,
by Rosemary Wells. As part of this unit of study, children
have many opportunities for experiencing a story with rich
language, strong characters and vivid images. GCSD has
provided a Guide to the K-5 Reserved Titles binder that
includes various learning activities to use with the text,
including Wingwalker: A Guide for Teachers &
Students.
Opportunities
for technology integration can be made using some of the
resources and ideas in this guide.
American
Experience website for “Surviving the Dust Bowl” at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/dustbowl
has audio and transcripts of interviews with people who
lived through that time period. By listening to or reading
these
·
first hand accounts of childhood experiences,
students gain a better understanding of the Dust Bowl, the
Great Depression and the story, Wingwalker.
Use these stories to help with discussion and writing
activities.
·
Students can use library and online resources
to conduct research on the Great Depression, Dust Bowl, and
wingwalkers or barnstormers. Use the following Kidspiration
documents as graphic organizers to for research note-taking
or have students use Kidspiration to design their own visual
representation of learning.
·
Use the Library of Congress American Memory online
collection of photographs at http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/fsahtml/fahome.html
to find digital images of the Dust Bowl and Great
Depression and share them with your students using iPhoto.
These photographs, taken by such noted photographers as
Dorthea Lange and Russell Lee, may be viewed directly at the
website or you can download select photographs right to the
iPhoto library on your computer and create a simple slidshow
of just the images that you want to focus on.

·
Images acquired by the American Memory website and
the techniques described by Brian Selznick (illustrator of
Wingwalker) in the Wingwalker: A Guide for Teachers &
Students can be an inspiration for creative expression
through writing and photography. Have students write journal
entries of a child during the Dust Bowl or of a scene from
Wingwalker. By using designing costumes, scenery and props,
students can “stage” photographs to illustrate their
writing and ideas. Our school digital camera (SONY Digital
Mavica) has a picture effect called, SEPIA that will take
pictures with an aged effect. Share the photos in an iPhoto
slideshow or any other way that you are comfortable using.
