Scenario
A
fourth grade teacher can use this activity to introduce the
use of various technology tools and software programs to
enhance established curriculum and to meet the NETS*S.
As
part of the science curriculum and in preparation for the
fourth grade NYS science assessment, students in fourth
grade explore simple machines and their uses.
Students also perform hands-on science activities
that encourage them to apply knowledge and solve real-world
problems.
In
this unit, students will first explore simple machines and
their uses. Students
will access a graphic organizer in the Science section of
Kidspiration; this will be used to gather and organize
information from a variety of textual and online sources.
They may print it out or save it on the school’s network.
By visiting websites that encourage them to explore
how simple machines work, kids will be prepared for the
hands-on portion of this unit.
Once
students have gathered background information about simple
machines, they are ready to gather photos of simple machines
from the world around them.
Students select a few simple machines (or compound
machines composed of simple machines), and write a short
composition for how each works.
Using a digital camera, students can photograph their
machines and import photos into iPhoto.
Next, students can create a PowerPoint slideshow
using photos and including text. These slides can then be
combined to create a class Simple Machines slideshow. |
