3rd Annual Laps of Love Walk-a-thon
Saturday, May 17, 2008---8:30 to 10:30AM
Guilderland High School Track
Benefits the Dale Westcott Scholarship Fund

The Laps of Love Walk-a-thon is an annual event held to raise money in support of the Dale Westcott Memorial Scholarship Fund. Dr. Westcott, a good friend and longtime leader as a teacher and administrator in the Guilderland School District, died from brain cancer in the fall of 2005. In the past two years, nearly $6,000 has been raised from Laps of Love, and two graduating seniors pursuing careers in math or science education have already benefited from this scholarship award.

If you are a teacher, administrator, parent or student whose lives were touched by Dale Westcott or his wife Barbara, please consider walking with us and/or making a contribution to Laps of Love on or before Saturday, May 17. This event is open to all members of the Guilderland School District community. Children who participate in this event must be accompanied by an adult.

All pledges and donations will be collected at the walk-a-thon on May 17 or can be sent to the main office at Pine Bush Elementary School. The walk-a-thon will take place rain or shine from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a kick-off ceremony to start things off at 8:30 a.m.

For more information about Laps of Love, please contact Tim Horan or Trisha McLean at Pine Bush Elementary School (357-2770). We hope to see you on Saturday, May 17 at the GCHS track to raise money for the Dale Westcott Memorial Scholarship Fund and continue to honor the spirit and memory of Dr. Westcott.

A gift-giving party to help the Kosiers get back on their feet

On Wednesday, April 9, the Guilderland High School community hosted a special "wedding shower" to show their support for two high school teachers, Dave and Stephanie Kosier, who lost all of their personal belongings in a fire. Thank you to everyone who participated in the planning of this event and to all of those in attendance.

Below is a special message from the Kosier family:
Thank you so much for all of your support--both emotional and financial. We are so lucky to work in and be a part of such a wonderful community. We appreciate everything you have done for us!

With thanks and love,

Honoring those who help make our community a better place:
GHS introduces new recognition program, “We Walk With Giants”

Do you know an outstanding GHS student or staff member who is helping to make the world a better place? If so, this is your opportunity to nominate him/her to be recognized as a Giant!

A Giant is a person (or group of people) who goes above and beyond in some way to make the world a better place. He/she might be working in the neighborhood, organizing a recycling program, or may be a cancer survivor and an amazing student and/or athlete. A Giant might be spending time caring for someone who is ill or elderly. This person is not doing the good deed for credit or community service; a Giant does an extraordinary act because it makes our community a better place to live and learn. If you know someone amazing who should be recognized as a Giant within our school community, please let us know about it!

There are four categories* of recognition:

  • Community Crusader

  • Defending the Planet

  • Fighting for Justice

  • Medical Marvel

*Adapted from the CNN hero project

Anyone can submit a nomination for consideration. (Download a nomination form here - PDF) Please direct completed nomination forms to Amy Salamone. All submissions will be reviewed by the “We Walk With Giants” committee (teachers Amy Salamone and Teresa Wood, Assistant Principal Lisa Patierne, and Principal Mike Paolino) and honorees will be named on a monthly basis. Selected Giants will be interviewed for both The Journal and the GHS Reporter. They will also have their picture displayed in the high school lobby as a reminder to us all that we can make a difference in our community!

The “We Walk with Giants” campaign was initiated by GHS English teacher Amy Salamone and members of the ninth grade advisory program, as a way to sponsor and promote a positive school-wide initiative. For more information on the program, please email salamonea@guilderlandschools.org.

We hope you will join us in making the program a success!

Operation Recognition underway at Guilderland

Guilderland Central School District is proud to be a partner in Operation Recognition, a New York State program which grants a high school diploma to any veteran who left school prior to graduation to serve in the military during World War II, the Korean Conflict, or the Vietnam War. Individuals need not have attended GCSD at the time of service to be eligible for this program. Diplomas may also be awarded to next of kin, if eligibility is established.

Community members interested in participating in Operation Recognition are encouraged to contact Guilderland Superintendent of Schools John McGuire at 456-6200, ext. 3102, or visit our Operation Recognition home page for additional details and eligibility requirements.
