Chemistry 2007-2008
Ms. Sebuyira Room E402
Email: Sebuyiraa@guilderlandschools.org
I. Materials: Bring your binder with blank paper, calculator and writing utensil to class everyday.
• Textbook –
Honors: Chemistry: Matter and Change published by Glencoe Science
Regents: Chemistry: Matter and Change published by Glencoe Science
• Review Book High Marks: Regents Chemistry
* Honors SAT II Chemistry review
• Chemistry Lab Manual
• 2.0-3.0" 3-Ring Binder with paper and 12 dividers. Your binder should contain plenty of paper for notes and one divider for each unit.

• Scientific calculator, preferably non-programmable. The calculator must be able to perform the following functions: scientific notation, logarithms, square roots, exponents, and negative numbers.  Graphing calculators are not allowed for the Regents.

• Writing utensils. Bring a pen or pencil to every class! (all labs in pencil)
II. Topics: Regents chemistry is divided into a number of units. Throughout each unit I will pass out many handouts and assignments, which you should file in your binder. On the day of the mid-term cumulative test I will collect and grade your binders, marking completion of the semester. This will grade will be kept as a cumulative grade to serve as a bonus on your average grade. You may earn up to 5 points. Your binder grade is based on organization, completeness, Neatness and correctness.

III. Grades: I will assess your understanding of chemical principles, problem-solving abilities, critical thinking, organization and other important skills through a variety of assignments:
• Homework Checks: Sometimes I will check that you have completed your homework, but I will not collect it. Each of these homework checks is worth a total of 2 points. You may earn all, some, or none of the points for any assignment.
• Homework Assignments: I will grade your process more than your answer. Be sure to show your work!
• Quizzes: You will have a number of quizzes throughout the year.
• Tests: You will be tested at the end of each unit for a total of three or four tests per quarter.
• Cumulative tests. You will be given 3 cumulative tests, Mid-term, 3/4 and a Final

• Laboratory Exercises: Before each lab I will check that you have completed the pre-lab assignment. During the lab you will fill out a laboratory data sheet, and after the lab you will complete a number of lab-related questions. I will grade the labs and we will review them in class.

• Formal Lab Reports: You will write up a formal lab report every third lab.
Your quarter grades are assessed as follows:
Tests/ 50% Quizzes 20% Homework 10% Labs 20% IV. Late Work: All assignments are due at the beginning of class.
• Homework Checks: You should have your completed homework with you when you come to class. I give no late credit on HW checks.
• Collected Homework Assignments: When I collect HW, you may turn in late assignments for a penalty of 10% per day until I hand back the assignment.
• Tests and Quizzes: You should take tests and quizzes early if you know in advance you will be missing class. In the event of an unanticipated absence, you may take them late; however, you must take them the day (or Advisory) you return unless you make alternative arrangements with me. Failure to follow these regulations will result in a 25% penalty per day. Early dismissal for sports or other activities does not excuse you from a test or quiz; you must take it earlier that day.
• Unit Packets: You may submit late unit packets for a penalty of 25% per day.
• Labs: I will give no late credit on pre-lab assignments. You may turn in collected labs for a penalty of 10% per day.
• Formal Lab Reports: You may turn in late lab reports for a 10% per day penalty until the end of the semester.
Exceptions to the rules regarding late work may be determined on an individual basis.
V. Absenteeism. Missing class is not an excuse for missing class material. If you miss class, check your calendar, your class log, read the textbook, and get notes from a classmate. If you need additional explanation, come see me. If you have the facilities, you may email me and I will send you the information you missed. You are responsible for finding out what you missed and you must catch up on all assignments the day you return to school. Failure to do so will result in penalties for late work as outlined above.
VI. Expectations and Rules
1. You can expect me to be respectful, responsible and honest. I expect the same from you.
2. Each member of the class should work to achieve an environment that supports learning. Please respect and assist your peers.
3. Because the tables may be covered in chemical residue, you may not eat or drink in the lab area. WHEN YOU EAT AT YOUR DESK PLEASE CLEAN UP.
4. Do not touch the water faucets or gas valves during class.
5. When doing a lab, always follow laboratory safety guidelines. When not in lab, please do not touch chemicals, glassware or equipment without permission.
