GHS to host a "Help with Completing the FAFSA" night on Jan. 26

Jan. 12, 2012Guilderland High School will be hosting its first “Help with Completing the FAFSA” program on Thursday, January 26, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the West Computer Lab. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application most colleges use to determine eligibility for federal, state, and college-sponsored financial aid, including grants, educational loans, and work-study programs.

Seniors and their parents must pre-register for one of two time slots: 6 to 7 p.m. or 7 to 8 p.m. by calling the Counseling Center at 861-8591, ext. 3000. Space is limited so we will be accepting pre-registrations on a first come, first served basis.

To make the most of this time, please bring the following with you:

FAFSA pin (you can get a pin at www.PIN.ed.gov)

Social Security numbers for parents and student

Your most recent tax returns (if you have 2011, great, if not bring 2010)

Any W2s, 1099s, last pay stub etc.

Current bank statements for checking, savings and investment accounts

Values of other investments

If you are receiving and kind of social security benefits or the like, the last statement for that as well

If this night does not work for you, Hudson Valley Community College will be sponsoring two opportunities for anyone to get help on their campus: on Wednesday, February 15 and Thursday, March 15, 2012. You must pre-register at www.hvcc.edu/finaid/workshops.
The University at Albany is also hosting a help session on January 21, 2012 beginning at 10:30 a.m. You must pre-register at www.suny.edu/student/event_listing.

Please be sure to check the financial aid requirements at each of the colleges to which you have applied. They each have their own deadlines and while they all require the FAFSA, they may also require additional forms including the CSS Profile (which you can access at www.Collegeboard.org) or their own institution’s form.

January is Financial Aid Awareness month. If you are planning to attend college in the fall, now is the time to work on completing your FAFSA as deadlines are quickly approaching.

Please remember that space is limited so we will be accepting preregistrations on a first come first served basis for the program on the 26th!
