Graduation Requirements: Every student in Guilderland High School is required to complete two credits in physical education. To accomplish this goal, a student must pass eight semesters earning a 1/4 credit per semester.
Curriculum:

 Physical Education 9-12
Students participate in a variety of units throughout the year. The categories of units the students experience are team and personal performance. The curriculum is knowledge based for future utilization as adult consumers. Throughout the year, components of fitness are taught and reinforced to provide the students with information to encourage healthy lifestyle choices. Twice a year, students participate in a personal fitness assessment for an opportunity to see the results of their current life style choices.

Grading Policy:

Participation is 60% of your grade. Being changed into appropriate clothing and being to class on time means your ready to earn your grade for that day! Everyday in class students are graded on participation using a rubric from 0 through 3 points. This is 3% of the student's grade final grade per day.

3 points for the day indicates the student has met or exceeded class expectations with exceptional participation.

2 points for the day represents the student has participated with good effort and participation with inconsistencies in effort and/or participation.

1 point for the day represents the student has participated with low effort and/or participation.

0 credit for the day means the student has no effort or participation. (Ex. Being unprepared)
A student will receive one of the following grades depending on their performance in PE at the end of each semester:
	S+ (100% - 85%)	S (84% - 75%)	S- (69% - 74%)	U (68% and below)
Knowledge and/or Skill are 40% of your grade. Homework, quizzes, classroom assessment and projects are a few of the methods for determining your knowledge and/or skill grade.
Interims: Each semester, students will receive an interim report in PE. This report is to notify the student and guardian about current performance in class as well as any assignments, classes, or quizzes the student must make-up. A student has 5 WEEKS from the interim to make-up any assignments required by that teacher. The interim report is a progress report. The final grade is received at the end of the semester and will be in their high school transcript.
Knowledge and/or Skill are 40% of your grade. Homework, quizzes, classroom assessment and projects are a few of the methods for determining your knowledge and/or skill grade.
Make- Ups for being absent or unprepared is done on an individual basis with the teacher. When a student is absent, they must make contact with their teacher as soon as they return to school. The absence must be made up during that specific unit that the student was absent from. Grading for a make up is the same as a regular class (3 points max.). Grading for a make up of an unprepared is a maximum of half the regular credit (1.5 points max.). There are NO make-ups for students that choose to cut class.
Medical Excuses: All original medical notes signed by a physician are to be brought, by the student, to the Health office. A copy will be given to the proper physical education teacher and placed on file. While under a medical excuse, students are expected to continue to change into their physical education attire. The physical education teacher for that particular class will respect excuses from parents. Students are still required to change for that class even though an excuse has been issued.
Medicals: 1 day to 3 weeks: Students are required to attend their regular PE class. Students are expected to change their clothes and be involved in class. Modified activity will be provided.
Medicals: Beyond 3 weeks: Students who have a medical excuse, which lasts longer than a three-week time frame will be enrolled in Adapted Physical Education.

Adapted Physical Education: This program is administered in the weight room to focus on the students strengths and keep them physically active for 80-120 minutes a week during their advisory block. Students will be signed to the library during their regular PE class. A member of the physical education staff works closely with each student to accomplish personal goals. For example, a student who has broken his/her ankle and is on a medical excuse for 6 weeks will be placed on a program that focuses on upper body conditioning and abdominal strength.

Dressing for class: Physical education class occurs every four days and students are required to bring a change of clothes for every class. Classes are 85 minutes long and usually very active
  • A lock is required for the security of your personal belongings. Very Important! The school district is not responsible for any loss of personal property.

  • A sleeved t-shirt that tucks in (no tank tops or spaghetti straps)

  • A pair of shorts or sweats without zippers, buckles or rivets (no cut offs or jeans)
