Parking applicants must read and agree to all of the terms and conditions outlined below. Failure to follow the instructions may result in the loss of parking privileges and possible further disciplinary actions.

We have 343 parking spaces for students. Senior applicants will receive priority for parking permits and the remaining spots will be awarded to junior applicants. Students are reminded that parking is a privilege, not a right, and is reserved for seniors and possibly for juniors as space allows. Students are expected to adhere to all NYS Department of Motor Vehicles laws pertaining to the operation of vehicles while at Guilderland High School. Failure to do so will result in the loss of permission to operate a vehicle on school property, citations, disciplinary consequences and/or vehicle impoundment. These guidelines have been developed to maintain the safe and orderly flow of traffic on the Guilderland High School campus.

Parking registration for senior applicants will take place in the West Office from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from Monday, January 28 through February 1, 2008. All senior applicants may pay and receive their parking permits at their time of application.

Parking registration for junior applicants will take place in the West Office from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from Monday, February 4 through February 8, 2008. All junior applicants may pay and receive their parking permits at their time of application. Registration will be open until all 343 permits have been distributed.

The registration fee of $12.50 should be paid by check and written out to Guilderland High School. A waiting list will be established if more than 343 students apply for parking privileges.

Important Dates

  • Monday, January 28 – Friday, February 1, 2008 = registration period for senior students

GHS Student Parking Guidelines

1. In order to receive a parking permit for the semester, the student must submit the following materials to be retained by the Office until destroyed at the conclusion of the semester:
- A Student Parking Application and Agreement form signed by both parent/guardian and the student
- A copy of his/her current valid NYS driver’s license
- A copy of the valid vehicle registration
- A copy of the current valid car insurance identification card (please check the dates on the card!)
- Payment in the amount of $12.50 made payable to Guilderland High School

No applications or partial applications will be accepted without all four valid documents and payment being submitted. Please check the expiration date on your insurance card before you apply.

2. The fee for the parking permit will be $12.50 per semester.

3. All student vehicles on campus must possess a current parking permit. The permit must be hung from the rear view mirror of the vehicle and must be in plain view. All parking permits will be dated and numbered in order to identify student vehicles.

4. Only vehicles with valid parking permits may be in the student lots between 6:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Students may not park or move their vehicle into a non-student lot until after 4:30 p.m. Parking in a staff lot or in a visitor parking spot before 4:30 p.m. will result in disciplinary consequences (see item #9 below).

5. Students will not be allowed to go to their cars during the school day without administrative approval. If approval is given, the student must present his/her pass to the monitor on duty at either the main or new gym entrances before exiting the building and must re-enter through that same entrance. Any student who fails to follow this procedure will receive an extended detention for being in an unauthorized area and will be considered in violation of the parking guidelines (see item #9 below).

6. Temporary permits may be granted on an individual basis for severe family hardship and will be offered at the discretion of the administrator in charge of parking. Parents and students must notify the administrator in charge of parking prior to bringing the vehicle to school. A temporary permit will be issued once it is verified and approved by the administration.

7. Because parking is a privilege, school officials have the right to search a student’s vehicle if they have reason to believe that it may contain anything that may endanger other students and/or school personnel.

8. Tardiness to advisory or classes, exceeding the speed limit on campus, dropping students in areas not designated for this purpose, driving recklessly, and/or parking in faculty lots will result in disciplinary action and the possible revocation of a student’s parking privileges. An excess of seven (7) unexcused late arrivals will be considered a violation of the parking guidelines and each consecutive tardy will be considered an additional violation (see item #9 below). This means that eight (8) unexcused late arrivals to school may result in the loss of your parking privileges.

9. A progressive disciplinary approach will be used when dealing with students who do not adhere to the school’s expectations and parking regulations. The following steps will be taken if a student violates the parking guidelines while in possession of a valid parking permit:

- First violation: 10 school days suspension of parking privileges and parents will be notified
- Second violation: Suspension of privileges for the remainder of the year, the student will spend the remainder of the day in the in-school detention room, and parents will be notified
- Third violation: Impoundment of vehicle at owner’s expense, loss of parking privileges, possible further disciplinary action, and parental contact

- If a student fails to secure the proper authorization prior to leaving campus during school hours, his/her parking privilege may be suspended for 10 school days. A second offense for the same reason will result in revocation of parking privileges for the remainder of the year. Leaving campus without permission may also result in school disciplinary consequences such as after-school detention, in-school detention and/or out-of-school suspension.

10. Students who park illegally in designated handicapped parking spots or in a fire lane may be ticketed by the Guilderland Police Department in addition to the disciplinary steps above.

11. Tickets and impoundment are only approved and requested by the building principal or his/her designee (when principal is out of the building). Students are responsible for all fees involved with ticketing and impoundment.

12. The school is not responsible or liable for any damage to, or loss of vehicle or personal property. Students will keep their vehicles locked at all times while parked on campus.
