Driver Education is offered after school, during the school year and also during the regular summer session.  The course consists of 24 hours of class room instruction and 24 hours of in car instruction.   Some students will already have their license while others have never been behind the wheel.

Classroom instruction is intended to help students realize how our highway transportation system works, and their role in it.  Lessons include vehicle controls, right of way, physics involved in driving, signs and markings. Their responsibility as a driver is discussed with emphasis on emotions and substances that can impact driving ability. Tips on buying a vehicle, shopping for insurance, and vehicle maintenance are also part of the class instruction.

The in car segment includes many of the same topics in practice.  Learning how to enter traffic from intersections, merging, maintaining speed, parking, lane changes, managing space, visibility and time.  Instruction can vary depending on the students ability level.

Course requirements:

  • Classroom Instruction: 24 hours of in-class instruction.

  • In-car Observation: 18 hours of road in-car time.

  • Student Driving Time: 6 hours of individual behind-the-wheel instruction.

    Total: 48 hours

In order to participate, students must be at least 16 years old and have a valid New York State learner's permit or driver’s license.

Attendance: It is the student's responsibility to meet the course requirements as established by the New York State Education Department.

Important information:

The Spring semester Driver Education program will run from July 1, 2008 through August 14, 2008. The registration cost is $331.00 per student and is non-refundable. The program can accommodate up to 48 students, with priority given first to Seniors and then Juniors. Within each grade level, a lottery system will be used.

The goal of the driver education program is to teach safe driving techniques. In the brief time that we will be working with your son/daughter behind the wheel, we cannot hope to satisfactorily prepare your child for the New York State Road Test. Therefore, it is essential that we have your assistance in providing as much practice driving time as possible for you child to drive your family car.

This program is an elective (one which you do not have to take) and disciplinary problems will not be tolerated in any way. If a discipline problem does occur, the following action will be taken:

1. We will call the parent(s) of the student in question.

2. If there is a second problem, the student will be dropped from the course with no refund.

If for any reason a student decides NOT to participate in Driver Education after payment has been made, he/she MUST inform Mr. Bailey in waiting so that others on the waiting list may take your place. NO REFUNDS will be given after June 25, 2008.

The Classroom and Driving Sessions:

All participants must complete the 48 hours required to receive their MV-285, Certificate of Completion. This expectation is rigorously monitored and must be met by each student. If a situation occurs where a student will miss a class (for a legitimate reason such as a serious illness or death in the family), these procedures must be followed:

1. If you know in advance that you will be unable to attend a driving session, consult with your driving instructor and try to switch with someone who drives at a different time. If you are unable to attend a classroom session, arrange to go to another class.

2. If you are unable to switch with another driver or attend another class, you are required to make up the driving or classroom session before the end of the course (scheduled at the discretion of the instructor).

3. Any student who misses more that two sessions of driver education (regardless if the previous class missed has been made up) may be dropped from the course. No MV-285, Certificate of Completion, will be issued and no money will be refunded.

Sessions will be assigned to students. You may, however, designate a first, second and third choice on the application form. Please note any extenuating circumstances that may be important in the scheduling process.

Important dates to remember:

  • Friday, May 16, 2008: Completed application form due to Mr. Bailey’s Office.

  • Tuesday, May 20, 2008: A list of students who are accepted will be posted in the Guidance Center, East Office, and West Office.

  • Wednesday, May 21, 2008 through Tuesday, May 27, 2008: Students bring payment for the course to the West Office. Students must show their learner’s permit at that time. No payment will be accepted without proof of the learner’s permit. Checks should be in the amount of $331.00 and should be made payable to “Guilderland High School”.

  • Monday, August 15, 2008: Certificates of Completion will be issued.

** Please Note: Students who fail to pay by May 27, 2008 will forfeit their enrollment. **
