Scholarship opportunities

 

Scholarship applications are available with Mrs. Howell in the Counseling Center. Requests for transcripts and/or letters of recommendation must be made 2 weeks before the application deadline.

v     Sam Walton Community Scholarship is a $1,000 award for graduating seniors. Interested students must not be an associate or child of associate at either Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club. Students should apply on-line beginning November 1, 2006. Please visit www.walmartfoundation.org and enter the access code SWCS. Deadline is January 12, 2007.

v     Bennington Young Writers Awards of $250 & $500 for 10th-12th  graders who excel in creative and critical writing. Interested students are encouraged to submit either poetry, fiction, or a nonfiction piece. All entries must be original work and sponsored by a high school teacher. Please visit www.bennington.edu for a submission form. Deadline is November 1, 2006.  

v     The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation College Scholarship Award is designated to assist students who have lost a parent to breast cancer. Seven scholarships up to $10,000 may be awarded annually. To qualify, students must be graduating seniors planning to attend a state-supported school, have a GPA of 2.8 or higher, and never been subject to any disciplinary action by any institution or entity, including, but not limited to, any educational or law enforcement agency. Deadline is November 1, 2006.

v     Toyota Community Scholars Awards (100 renewable $10,000 or $20,000 scholarships) is for high school seniors who have an outstanding academic record, is an effective leader, and have a well documented record of service both within and outside the school setting. Interested students must demonstrate philanthropic giving and volunteerism. To be eligible students must have GPA of 3.0 or better, be actively involved in service organization or project that has a positive impact on the school/community, and plan to enroll in a four-year college. Deadline is December 1, 2006.

v     Rider University’s 27th Annual High School Writing Contest is for students interested in various forms of writing. Students may submit either an essay, fiction piece, or a piece of poetry. All submissions must be original works and entries must include a letter from a teacher verifying its authenticity. Deadline is December 15, 2006.

The Counseling Center has a variety of free publications available for students.  These include NextSTEP, Collegebound, and Your College Search.  These magazines offer helpful information about financial aid, declaring majors, studying abroad, transition to college, etc.  Please feel free to pick up copies of these publications.
