Scholarship opportunities

 

Scholarship applications are available with Mrs. Howell in the Counseling Center. Requests for transcripts and/or letters of recommendation must be made 2 weeks before the application deadline.

v      Drexel University’s Ten-Page Screenplay Contest is for juniors and seniors who are interested in screenwriting. Interested students must submit an original screenplay that is no more that 10 pages and no less than 3 scenes. The 1st place winner will receive a $5,000 Drexel Scholarship, 2nd is $3,000 and 3rd place is $1,000 in Drexel Scholarships. Deadline is December 1, 2006.

v      HVCC has many scholarships for seniors who are planning to attend in the fall of 2007.

Deadline is February 23, 2006.

v      Ayn Rand’s Essay Contest is for high school students: 9-10th graders on the book Anthem, and 11-12th graders on the book The Fountainhead. For both contests students will have to answer essay questions and will be judged on style and content. Judges are looking for writing that is clear, articulate and logically organized. Deadline for 9-10th graders is March 20, 2006 and the 11-12th grade deadline is April 25, 2006.

 

v      The Better Business Bureau’s Student of Integrity Scholarship is for high school students who are interested in pursuing secondary education and is open to all seniors who live in Upstate New York. Students will be judged on their ability to exemplify the ethical standards of the BBB and its members as well as their academic achievements and involvement in the community. Students must also submit an essay. Deadline is January 2, 2007.

 

v      The Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King Lecture Series at Siena College presents the Courage Award. This award is presented to a youth who has shown personal courage by taking positive action against racism, prejudice and bias-related violence in their school or community. Awards will be $500, $300 and $200. Nomination deadline is December 8, 2006.

 

v      The National Co-Op Scholarship Program has 175 merit scholarships for students who are interested in attending one of the participating colleges and plan to participate in the college cooperative education program. Each college and university have specific scholarships which interested students should read. Participating colleges include Antioch College, Drexel University, Kettering University, Northeastern University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, CW Post of Long Island University, RIT, Johnson & Wales, University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo and Pace University. Deadline is February 15, 2007.

·         HVCC is offering Financial Aid Informational Sessions on 11/29/06, 12/13/06, 3/21/07, 4/25/07, and 5/08/07 from 6-8PM in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center. Please call 629-7150 with any questions or for more information.

·         Albany Medical Center hosts the Diagnostic Therapeutic Services Health Career Exploration Day on November 18, 2006. This program will provide high school students with information about allied health professionals. Interested students must register by November 12, 2006. Please call 262-3705.

The Telluride Association is seeking highly motivated 10th grade students who are interested in attending the Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar (TASS). This program is held in the summer from June 25th to August 5th and is for exceptionally promising high school students. Students will study African American Studies as well as different topics and participate in writing and computer seminars, and visit museums and cultural sites. Students can sign Nominations are due by November 27, 2006.

The Counseling Center has a variety of free publications available for students.  These include NextSTEP, Collegebound, and Your College Search.  These magazines offer helpful information about financial aid, declaring majors, studying abroad, transition to college, etc.  Please feel free to pick up copies of these publications.
