Scholarship opportunities

 

Scholarship applications are available with Mrs. Howell in the Counseling Center. Requests for transcripts and/or letters of recommendation must be made 2 weeks before the application deadline.

v     The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts offers the Live the Dream Talent Search for seniors who are 17-18 years old who are in the performing, literary and/or visual arts. Please visit www.nfaa.artsawards.org for more information. Registration deadline is October 2, 2006.

 

v     Washington University in St. Louis offers the William H. and Elizabeth G. Danforth Scholars Program for seniors interested in attending in the fall of 2007. Students must exhibit maturity, strong moral character, selflessness, commitment to community, and the ability to stand out among their peers. Application deadline is October 15, 2006.

 

v     The Horatio Alger Association Scholarship Program offers financial assistance of $1,000-$20,000 to students who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Interested students must graduate in the spring or summer of 2007, be a US citizen or have permanent residency, and pursue a bachelor’s degree. Applications are due October 30, 2006.

 

v     The Coca-Cola Scholars Program offers 250 achievement based scholarships for graduating seniors. Applicants will be judged on: leadership in school, commitment to community, academic achievement, and part-time employment. Students must submit applications through the scholarship website at http://www.coca-colascholars.org. Application deadline is October 31, 2006.

 

v     The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honors middle school and high school students for their community involvement and achievement. Students may only submit their volunteer/ community services performed after September 1, 2005. Students wishing to apply may pick up an application in the College and Career Center and then return it to the College and Career Center by October 31, 2006. Seniors interested in HVCC should go pick up an application from their counselor and sign up in the College and Career Center. Return a completed application and sign up for an interview and time. You must sign up before November 1, 2006.

v      The National Young Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. is an intensive and stimulating leadership program. Participants examine the concept of leadership in the context of national and global issues, covering both long-term trends and day-to-day events. Tuition for the program is $1,335. Student selection priority will be given to students in the top 5% of their class and who have held significant extra-curricular leadership positions. Application deadline is September 22, 2006.

 

v      The Pumpkin Patch Child Center in Guilderland needs two people to work Monday through Friday from 3:00-5:30PM. The pay starts at $7.50/hr. If you are interested, please call 452-0984.

 

v      A community member needs a babysitter for a one and four year old for weekends and some evenings. The pay is between $5.00 and $7.00 and is based on experience. Please stop by the College and Career Center for more information.

 

v      TEACH, an Educational Consulting Firm, is offering an SAT prep course at Union College on Mondays from 6:30PM- 9:30PM, September 18th - October 11th.  If interested, please call   355-0394.

 

v      Sylvan Learning Center is offering SAT prep sessions from September 25th-October 25th. Three additional tests will be given on 9/23, 10/14 & 10/28 from 9AM-12:30PM. The cost of the courses is $995. For more information or to sign up please call 869-6005 ext. 11.

 

v      Smith College will be hosting the Women of Distinction Program for high school seniors. Running October 27-29, this program highlights the opportunities at Smith for African American, Asian American, Latina and Native American women. Please visit www.smith.edu/admissions.wod. The Counseling Center has a variety of free publications available for students.  These include NextSTEP, Collegebound, and Your College Search.  These magazines offer helpful information about financial aid, declaring majors, studying abroad, transition to college, etc.  Please feel free to pick up copies of these publications.
