Scholarship opportunities

 

Scholarship applications are available with Mrs. Howell in the Counseling Center. Requests for transcripts and/or letters of recommendation must be made 2 weeks before the application deadline.

v      Wendy’s Restaurants and the Heisman Memorial Trophy Committee is honoring male and female high school scholar-athlete-citizens by recognizing them for their excellence in the classroom, on the field, and within their communities. Two students who show dedication, hard work and act as a role model for underclassmen will be nominated. If you are interested in being nominated, please sign up in the College and Career Center before October 2, 2006.

v      The AXA Foundation, in association with US News & World Report offers the following AXA Achievement Scholarships: A $10,000 national scholarship to one student in each state, $15,000 in additional scholarships to 10 national recipients in which the winner will win a computer for college and up to $25,000. Students must demonstrate ambitious goals, drive, determination, ability to succeed in college, and display respect for self, family and community. v      Westminster College, Wilmington (PA) offers many different merit-based scholarships which have different criteria for each. If you are interested in Westminster College, please stop by the College and Career Center for the details.

v      Emory University announces the Emory Scholars Program for perspective students, offers such assistance as 2/3 tuition, full tuition, room, board and fees. Students who are accepted into this program may participate in an extensive academic enrichment program including independent research, study abroad, and diverse service-learning opportunities. For more information about this program and how to apply, please visit www.emory.edu/admissions. Students who are interested must submit their application to Emory by November 1, 2006.  

v      NYU invites nominations for the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Program which honors students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, shown significant involvement in school and community activities, and also exemplify the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This program offers seminars, domestic and international travel, research, educational and cultural activities, and community service. For more information please visit www.nyu.edu/mlkscholars. Nomination deadline is November 1, 2006.

v      The SAE Engineering Program is for students interested in the engineering field and related sciences. There are two types of scholarships available to students: The 1st is the University sponsored scholarship which range from $400 through full tuition and are sponsored by participating Universities.  To qualify, the student must enroll in that specific school and program. The 2nd type is the Undesignated Scholarships. These corporate-sponsored scholarships range from $1,000-$10,000. To qualify, students must enroll in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Application deadlines are December 1, 2006.

You will need a pass to enter the College Fair. You will need your teacher’s permission to attend the fair. Please check out the bulletin board outside of the guidance office to see when your favorite school will be here.                                      

Ø       College Information Day is October 25, 2006 from 6PM-8PM at HVCC. Over 200 schools are attending and admission is free.

 

Ø       St. Peters Hospital offers the Junior Volunteer Program. A “junior” volunteer is between the ages of 14 and 18 and will work in the hospital in the following areas: patient units, clerical, delivery, retail, and childcare areas. Please call 525-1515 for an interview or more information.

 

Ø       The Albany Medical College Science Technology Entry Program is for underrepresented minority students in 7th-12th grade from the Capital District who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine or an allied health field. Interested students must have an 80% average or better. Please contact 262-5947 for more information. Applications are due October 6, 2006.

SUMMER PROGRAMS

 

 

The Counseling Center has a variety of free publications available for students.  These include NextSTEP, Collegebound, and Your College Search.  These magazines offer helpful information about financial aid, declaring majors, studying abroad, transition to college, etc.  Please feel free to pick up copies of these publications.
