Scholarship opportunities

 

Scholarship applications are available with Mrs. Howell in the Counseling Center. Requests for transcripts and/or letters of recommendation must be made 2 weeks before the application deadline.

Ø            The Bethlehem Business Women’s Club is offering a $1,500 scholarship.  Applicants must be a resident of the town of Bethlehem.  For more information regarding this scholarship opportunity, please contact Kathleen Newkirk at 439-4955 ext. 183.  Application deadline is April 1, 2005.
Ø            Georgian Court University  is offering a $5,000 Women’s Leadership Award to students who plan to continue their active leadership roles in college. Students must apply and be admitted to Georgian Court University and file a free application for Federal Student Aid online at www.fafsa.ed.gov in order to be considered for this award.  In order to be eligible for the awards, students must demonstrate leadership and service in school, community, or church settings. Students also must submit two letters of recommendation along with the application.  Application deadline is April 1, 2005.
Ø            Skidmore College is awarding at least five $40,000 scholarships to students who demonstrate exceptional promise of study in math and science.  This is a merit-based scholarship and is awarded without regard to financial need.  The Porter Presidential Scholarships require that students respond to the Porter essay question on the Skidmore Supplement to the Common Application.  Candidates will be selected on the strength of their admission applications with emphasis on their performance in math and science.  Attention is also given to standardized testing.  Application deadline is April 1, 2005.
Ø         The Capital District Counseling Association is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a student enrolling at a Capital Region undergraduate institution. Students must be enrolling in either a 2 or 4-year college for the fall of 2005. Students need to submit an essay along with one letter of recommendation. Application deadline is April 15, 2005.
Ø            Each year the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs, along with the New York State Showpeople’s Association, offer five $1,000 scholarships to NYS high school seniors. These seniors must be New York residents who plan to pursue a degree in agriculture or fair management. The applicant must now be or have been previously active in the Altamont Fair. Applicants will then be judged on scholastic standing, an essay, citizenship and leadership, fair participation, field of study, and presentation of application. Application deadline is April 9, 2005.
Ø           The Village Stage Theater announces their art award for any graduating senior who is a resident of the town of Bethlehem. Applicants must have been involved with theater in any capacity, either on stage or behind the scenes. Applicants must plan to pursue theater as a career or avocation. Application deadline is April 15 2005.
Ø            The Junior League of Albany is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through effective action of trained volunteers. They are offering the Rockwell Scholarship in memory of Marjorie Doyle Rockwell in the amount of $1,000. Applicants must be female graduating seniors who have demonstrated an interest in volunteerism. Applicants must be planning to attend an accredited college or university and are currently involved in volunteer organizations or activities, which serve the same or related focus areas as the Junior League of Albany’s focus areas. Students also must demonstrate citizenship and initiative. Students must also send a writing narrative.  Application deadline is April 15, 2005.
Ø            Ellis Law announces it’s “STOP-DWI” Scholarship program. Ellis Law will award ten $1,000 scholarships to the high school seniors who write the best essay entitled “How to stop teenage drinking and driving.” This scholarship is for students residing in the Mid-Hudson Valley and Capital District areas who plan to enroll in a full-time college program in the fall of 2005. Current clients of Ellis, their relatives, or relatives of Ellis employees are not eligible. Application deadline is April 15, 2005.
Ø            The American Society of Civil Engineers is pleased to announce its $1,500 annual scholarship competition. The competition is open to any graduating senior who intends to enroll in an educational institution majoring in a curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. Applicants must also write a 500-word essay. Application deadline is April 15, 2005.
Ø            Family, friends, and colleagues of Gene Robb have established the Gene Robb Journalism Scholarship. This scholarship is available to area high school students planning to pursue a career in journalism. Applicants must plan to be full time first year students at an accredited college or university. Applicants must also write a sample editorial and a sample news story. Application deadline is April 15, 2005.
Ø            The New York State AFL-CIO will award a 4-year scholarship to a 2005 graduating senior who intends to pursue a career in labor relations or a related field at an accredited institution of higher education in NYS. This scholarship will be for $2,000 a year for 4 consecutive years and be given the opportunity to work for the NYS AFL-CIO as a paid intern. Applicants must have a parent or guardian who is a member of a union affiliated with the NYS AFL-CIO and write an essay. Application deadline is April 15, 2005.

Ø            SUNY Cobleskill is hosting 2 training sessions for students planning to attend the Grand Model United Nations Summit. This opportunity gives students of all ages the opportunity to explore world events and learn intricacies of debate and compromise. Application deadline is March 28, 2005.
Ø            Fulton Montgomery Community College is offering seniors instant admit days. This allows the student to apply to FMCC and take their placement test during spring break without paying the $40 application fee. The dates include 4/19, 4/20, 4/21, and 4/22. For more information please call the FMCC admissions office at 736-5300.
Ø            Hudson Valley Community College is hosting Instant Admit Days on April 20, May 11, June 22, and July 20. Students need to bring a copy of their high school transcript or a copy of their GED score report.
Ø           Hudson Valley Community College is offering Financial Aid Information Sessions. These sessions will be held on 4/2 and 4/12.

SUMMER PROGRAMS

 

 

Ø            The Kopernik Talent Search offers an intensive residential summer science institute for grades 7-12. This gives students a preview of college work and residential living as they pursue scientific investigations in astronomy and space science. There are many different science programs to choose from. There is financial aid available. Costs range from $156 to $1,370.  Students would stay on campus at Binghamton University. Application deadline is April 18, 2005.
Ø            The Marist Summer Business Institute is a program for high school juniors who are interested in being entrepreneurs and earning 3 college credits. This program runs from July 9-July 21 and costs $1,800. The application deadline is April 1, 2005.
Ø            Pratt offers 400 high school students the chance to experience college level courses. Students must be 16 years of age and have completed their sophomore year. Students choose from a variety of different programs. The course runs from 7/5-7/29 and the cost is $1,975. Application deadline is April 1, 2005.
Ø           Georgetown University offers many summer programs including a Summer College for high school juniors, a Gateway to Business Program for high school juniors, a College Prep Program, and an International Relations program. Dates and fees vary depending on program. Application deadline for all programs is early April.
Ø            The Junior Statesmen Summer School is seeking freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who have a passionate interest in politics and current events. Applicants should have an interest in discussing and debating issues. Classes are held either at Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Northwestern or Georgetown University. For more information please visit www.jsa.org. Application deadline is April 29, 2005.

The Counseling Center has a variety of free publications available for students.  These include NextSTEP, Collegebound, and Your College Search.  These magazines offer helpful information about financial aid, declaring majors, studying abroad, transition to college, etc.  Please feel free to pick up copies of these publications.
