Community and School

Guilderland is a residential suburb of Albany, NY, with a heterogeneous population of approximately 30,000. The people of our community have placed a high priority on the education of their children and have given the school system the highest level of support possible.

Guilderland High School is a four-year, co-educational, comprehensive public school with an enrollment of 2000 students. The teaching staff numbers 150. Beginning in the school year 1997-98, Guilderland High School has adopted BLOCK SCHEDULING. Classes meet for 85 minutes every other day in a 4-day rotation with the exception of science courses which meet 3 out of the 4 days. All Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors are required to carry a minimum of 6 courses plus physical education each year. Seniors are required to carry a minimum of 5 courses plus physical education each year. New York State students are required to pass one unit of Fine Arts and one half-unit of Health. Guilderland High School offers these courses only at the college preparatory level.

Other Level Courses

 Regents Courses (Level 2): This is a standard college preparatory program.

 Core Courses (Level 3): Core level courses meet the needs of students who benefit from instruction at a slower pace with more emphasis on specific skills.

 X-Courses (Level 1 or 2): X-Courses are interdisciplinary with great emphasis on writing journals, reading independently and preparing classroom presentations and projects both individually and in groups.  Especially designed for college-bound students.

All students take a New York State Regents Examination at the completion of each course when offered.
