Important information about the 9/28 GHS Open House

The following is a letter from GHS Principal Lutsic regarding the Sept. 28 open house; please see additional information posted under the letter

Sept. 20, 2017

Dear Parent/Guardian:

On behalf of the faculty and staff of Guilderland High School I would like to invite you to our Open House which will take place on Thursday, September 28, 2017, starting at 6:30 p.m. The 2017-2018 school year is off to an outstanding start with both staff and students exhibiting a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm for being a part of Guilderland High School. Open House is our opportunity to share that excitement with our parents.

Our Open House celebration is a great chance for you, our parents, to begin to make some strong connections with GHS, or to further enhance those connections that we have already made. While Open House offers an invaluable opportunity for parents to gain insight into your child’s program, it is not a time for one-on-one conversation regarding your child’s academics. This type of one-on-one interaction can be easily arranged by simply filling out a “Conference Request” form. These forms will be available to you in the Main Lobby when you arrive at Open House.

Open House also provides an opportunity to become connected to the high school community through membership in the PTSA. Tables with information will be manned by students around the building selling PTSA memberships.

Since Open House is always a popular night, please plan on arriving early. Even though we will have staff directing traffic, you will encounter traffic congestion and parking difficulty as the parking lots begin to fill up by 6:00. Additional parking will be available in the transportation parking lot with a shuttle service to the high school. Entrance to the transportation lot is on the Route 146 side of the Guilderland Center Fire House. If you have an opportunity to car pool, it may help decrease the overall volume of traffic.

Please be sure to review the enclosed information prior to September 28. Remember, the evening will start promptly at 6:30 p.m. in your child’s homeroom, so try not to miss out on the valuable information offered. It will save you time if you access School Tool and print your child’s schedule at home. Tables will be set up at the front entrance of the high school with extra copies of student schedules in case you forget to access the School Tool Parent/Student Portal, but the lines can be long. In addition, student guides will be stationed throughout the building to assist in locating classrooms.

I wish you an enjoyable experience on September 28.

Thomas Lutsic

Our Goals for Open House are:

1) To have you experience the schedule and classes of your child.

2) If your child attends VOTEC:
A) Shift 1 (morning session) students have no assigned homeroom. Your child’s schedule may be accessed through the Schooltool Parent/Student Portal or picked up in the Main Lobby. You will not be attending a class until Block 3.

B) Shift 2 (afternoon session) VOTEC parents should attend homeroom as outlined.

3) Parents who have a child assigned to Music/Study Hall, should instead go to their child’s assigned music class.

4) If your child is assigned to a Health/Music class during blocks 2AC and/or 3AC, you have a choice; you may go to either one. However, please note there is time for only one.

Parents are encouraged to take advantage of unassigned/study hall time to visit other areas of the high school. Areas such as the library, computer labs, cafeteria and Guidance Center will be open for parents’ convenience throughout the night.

Conference request forms will be available in the Main Lobby and New Gym Lobby. Completed forms may be left in the main office or counseling center.

Other helpful hints to assist you

1) Bring this notice and your child’s schedule with you to Open House. If you do happen to forget it, there will be schedules available in the front lobby on the night of Open House, but it will save time to access it through Schooltool and bring it with you.

2) Plan to arrive early if possible. This will assure that you will be able to experience your child’s complete school program. Shuttle service is available from the transportation lot.

3) “Student Guides” will be available to assist you. They will be glad to help if you are unsure of where your child’s classes are in the building.

4) Please take a moment to fill out the evaluation form that will be available in the Main Lobby and West Gym Lobby. Please return the form to one of the tables in the lobby as you leave for the night.
