Members of the senior class: Are you interested in speaking at this year's graduation ceremony?

The following is a letter to members of the senior class from Principal Lutsic:

Members of the senior class:

I am excited to present you with an opportunity to address classmates, family, friends, faculty and guests at the 2017 Graduation Commencement. The following is a description of the process used in selecting seniors to deliver the various graduation speeches for the Class of 2017.

For each of the graduation speeches (Student Commencement Address, Welcoming Remarks and Introduction of Guest Speaker), students will be selected through an application screening and tryout process, rather than by an appointment. Any interested student may submit a typed speech to be judged by a review panel of teachers. The speeches will be screened and final applicants will be asked to present their speeches to the review panel of teachers in the Principal’s Conference Room. One speaker in each category will be selected from this audition. The successful candidates will be expected to practice their speech during the final week before graduation with myself or my designee.

Please be advised that the Commencement Address should be approximately 4-6 minutes in length. The Welcoming Speech and Introduction of Guest Speaker should last 1-2 minutes. (Time will be strictly adhered to and will be a condition for selection). Generally speaking, the topic of each speech is as follows:

Student Commencement Address: Academic in nature, typically focused on future goals, commitment, learning from the past/present, one’s role as a citizen, challenge to classmates to make a difference, etc.

Welcoming Address: Warm, friendly invitation for all present to join in your celebration. It is often thankful for the past focusing on support you received from various resources/people, but can also give a personal flavor of commitment and appreciation to the graduates. Its function is to open the ceremonies in a formal, yet upbeat manner.

Introduction of Guest Speaker: TBD

Those students who wish to try out for the honor of speaking at graduation must submit their typed speech to the Principal’s Office no later than Monday, May 15. All applications received will be screened, and those candidates chosen as finalists will be notified by Monday, May 22.

If you have further questions, please feel free to stop by my office.

Principal Thomas Lutsic
