Through this project the second
grade kids learned how to create an artwork using
this artistic process of printmaking. The
students began the project with observational
drawings from nature. We based our project on
natural growing plants and insects to reflect our
Pine Bush community. The kids then recreated their
drawing by cutting out the organic shapes of
the flowers, butterflies, etc. from oaktag paper and
gluing them to a cardboard background. The 2nd
graders then learned how to roll paint over their
work with a printing brayer to transfer the
image onto a new colored background. The printing
process was completed in2 layers. The final step was
to add detail back into their work through
outlining and drawing in details with oil
pastels. Awesome work second graders! |

The second graders learned
about communities both in their classrooms and in
art. Together we discussed the characteristics and
differences of rural, suburban, and
urban
communities. The students had their choice of which
type of community they wanted to create. Beginning
with a drawing of the buildings and details relative
to the kind of community each student chose, the
kids finished their artwork with the wax-resist
method (crayons under watercolors). Great
interdisciplinary learning! |

The 2nd grade
students reviewed that a picture done by an artist of a person is called
a portrait, and that when it is a picture of the artist himself,
it is known as a self-portrait. Done as a school-wide project
based on the book "I am America," by our visiting author, Charles R.
Smith, Jr., the kids created these beautiful works with self-painted
pattern paper used to create a quilt-like background, craypas and
watercolors. Full of color and character- an awesome way to welcome
Charles R. Smith, Jr. to our Pine Bush hallways!
The second graders
learned about the life of artist Vincent VanGogh. The kids
observed various works by VanGogh and discovered the sense of
movement within each of his paintings created by VanGogh's use of
small brushstrokes. The kids learned the difference between a 2D
and 3D artwork (HxW vs. HxWxD). The kids also learned how
to create a clay relief to recreate the movement of VanGogh.
Lastly, the 2nd graders completed the works using small brushstrokes of
paint to simulate the style of the artist. A challenge the kids
successfully met! Great job 2nd graders! |
