A message from the Superintendent

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Recently we were made aware that a Guilderland student made an offensive and racist remark about a fellow student. Since that time, the remark has been shared widely on social media and has raised questions about whether all students are valued and respected at Guilderland High School.

When the matter was brought to the attention of the high school administration, they investigated and followed the district’s Code of Conduct.

Please know that the district takes issues such as these very seriously. No student should ever be subject to hurtful language. We cannot condone it and we will always work to ensure all of our students feel protected and respected.

As a district we have a long history of working with our faculty, staff and students to understand and appreciate the differences among us. In addition, we have plans to continue to engage our school community in learning about diversity and being respectful in how we treat one another, both online and in person. We are committed to supporting all of our students as they learn and grow in our increasingly diverse community.

Clearly, we still have work to do. Now, more than ever, we need to engage all stakeholders in this important endeavor.

Dr. Marie Wiles

Superintendent of Schools
